The sun comes up on a fleabag our hero checks in at four
He's snoring away on a dune rag but it's dawn and he'll snore no more
There's a cough, a sneeze, a dreadful bark, some woman yells hush up
The woman is louder than Pepe is but Pepe will not shut up
Pepe hush, don't make so much noise
Pepe hush, don't make so much noise
He bounds on the wall with his left foot and jumps on the bed with his right
The woman is screaming at Pepe and Pepe seems very uptight
Pepe hush, don't make so much noise
Pepe hush, don't make so much noise
He falls on the lamp with his face first and fries his nose on the bulb
He scratches his eye on the lamp shade and falls on the floor with a thud
Pepe hush, don't make so much noise
Pepe hush, don't make so much noise
That drove Pepe crazy, now Pepe knew something was up or down
The guy is completely unconscious and Pepe's got his ear to the ground
He barked for his mom to protect him
He barked for the clown at the desk
He barked for no good reason
Pepe was doing his best
Pepe hush, don't make so much noise
Pepe hush, don't make so much noise
So in a dream he advanced, he'd break that woman's arm
Her ulna did not stand a chance, but the dog would be the first thing he'd harm
He hung it outside on a power line and laughed as it emitted sparks
But when he regained his consciousness the first thing he heard was a bark
He said
Pepe hush, don't make so much noise
Pepe hush, don't make so much noise
He's snoring away on a dune rag but it's dawn and he'll snore no more
There's a cough, a sneeze, a dreadful bark, some woman yells hush up

Weird? No, Awesome.
Weird
My WTF hearing of partial lyrics inspired me to login and read the rest of them. Truely, another inspired performance from the man who gave us "Jack Gets Up".
I don't get it.
Having read the comments and the lyrics, I'm giving this a 9 to balance things out a bit.
Nice, that lifted it to 6.5

In a 1992 interview, Leo Kottke stated his inspiration for this song:
"It's one of the few things I've written that actually came from something I'd experienced. You won't believe this—nobody would—but it's true: I was in a real dump of a motel in Tennessee, and a dog started barking at the crack of dawn, and some woman was yelling 'Pepe, hush!' The thing is that's happened twice more since then. Once in Indiana and then some other place a dog has started barking and a woman's voice says 'Pepe, be quiet,' or 'Pepe, hush up!' something like that. That's too much. I can't take that in, really."

WTF....?!?
This makes me think of the famous romantic stinker, Pepé le Pew:

I have 2 barky Border collies, well trained and very intellegent. one barks then the other barks because the first one did, the first barks because the second one did then my wife joins in by shouting the dogs names. this goes on for a while until I step in and give them all some cheese. All is quiet for a short while. what else can I do, Sodium pentabarbitol?

this song is a little hard to take
but after Little Walter it takes on a greater degree of awfulness

Good catch. All "songs" by the guy Beck have already been written.
Anyone else hear BECK in here??

That's good, because yer man's singing about someone else's irritating dog and its even more irritating owner. A righteous rant, IMO.
As someone who has just arrived at work and has yet to have coffee I can say definitively that the last thing I want to hear is someone singing about their dog.

Even with Leo's croaking, I love this song.

Not Leo's best but pretty good.

At least it is original, I think. He probably pinched it like he does everything else.

I find it interesting that Margo Timmons and Lyle Lovett are credited with the backing vocals on this album.
I was such a Kottke fan in the 70s. I'm having a little trouble with this phase of his.
cheap version of Lou Reed
This is awesome! I f*cking HATE yappy dogs!!!

This was recorded in 1991, so I think if anything it would be the other way around
Sometimes he reminds me of Lou Reed.
The guitar playing and singing is good (as always with LK) but I don't care for the lyrics. Lame.
Damn, I missed Pepe Gotta love that Leo and his stories...

You guys really like this? Great to have people with different musical tastes in RP,...
Great programming choice. For some reason this quirky song has always been my favorite from this record although there's so much other great music on the album. Love Margot's backing vocals, an excellent use of her talents...
leo, leo, anything leo. quirky perky song, just what the doctor ordered. and as someone said a little further down....death to rat dogs.
Yippieeeeeeeeee \:D/
Anyone else hear BECK in here??
I like story songs
This song is great. So is Leo. 10.
This one is a head scratcher for me. It\'s a good song, but there is SO much more Leo Kottke music out there that is much better. Take \"Stealing\", for instance, or \"Jack Fig\".
Kottke\'s singing voice has aged well...like wine. This one doesn\'t sound the the old \"geese farts on a muggy day\" rasp he used to have.
love the irony that one of the quietest voices in music, Margo Timmins, is singing what "our hero" hears as shouting. (and of course the guitar is nice, too.) great song!
The guy with the magic fingers! :)
This song cracks me up - 10
sounds like a folky Lou Reed :p
Neat little song!
Quirky. Cool. I love inventive fun. Margo is a Goddess. Leo had a good idea.
What an odd - but not bad - combination of voices. I hope I hear the whole song next time it plays.
