I hope you're happy now...
...I could never make you so...
you were a hard man...
no harder in this world
you made me cold and you made me hard
and you made me the thief of your heart

Winter is cold...oh!
But you're colder still
and for the first time
I feel like you're mine
I share you with the one who will
mend what falls apart
and turn a blind eye
to the thief of your heart

Ohhh you lost
Ohhh you lost all
you lost all
you lost all

I'll never wash these clothes
I want to keep the stain
Your blood to me is precious
nor would I spill it in vain
your spirit sings
though your lips never part
singing only to me
the thief of your heart

Ohhh you lost

Ohhh you lost
Ohhh you lost all
lost all

Ohhh you lost
Ohhh you lost all
lost all

All of the controversy started when she spoke the truth.  I wish I had not gotten caught up in all of that.  My name is Sinead and I used to say stuff apologizing for her ripping up the picture of the Pope.  If only we were all as brave and prescient as she was. Oh .. and TALENTED!!
Sinead had the ability to make us feel deeply, something I don't find with most artists.  This tune and Downpressor Man are two of my favs.
What a voice - for my money one of the best ever. In my top 3 female vocalists. Chrissie Hind has the sexiest voice, no contest. For best voice, it's between Sinead and Natalie Merchant.
Always so much passion and conviction. She never did anything half-assed.
Wow! Chills
Long live Sinead. A fearless and tender warrior-monk that never backed down from a fight when she had righteousness at her back, as she always did. She will always be one of those rare champions of humanity.
This song is my favorite from her. Good lyrics by Bono without being overbearing or on the nose. Effectively sets the mood for the film directed by Jim Sheridan.

No it can't. It's 30. Sorry!

Oh you Lost. You Lost All -... Ireland. What have they done to you?
If Sinéad was alive today, I wonder what she'd say.

Éirinn go Brách.
Blessed simplicity and beauty here... Rest In peace Sinead!
The way she used her incredible voice with the powerful music was nothing less than immortal! RIP...
Perhaps Sinéad's finest musical moment . . . and that's saying a lot!
I never got used to her voice. But she's very interesting individual no doubt.

She has a gift, an awesome and mighty gift. To take words and music and imbue them with more life and passion than you think a single song can hold. To transfix the listener and transport them to the place in which the story transpires. To pour her tortured soul into a song and make you feel a little saner and stronger for having shared the experience.

so true.
Godlike! May God bless you and keep you Sinead ❤️ you are missed!!
A great track from a great movie, performed by a great singer.
It really hurt when I heard the sad news. I've always had deep respect for Sinéad. From the music it was obvious she was a tormented soul, but she kept on pushing on with her unique style and total disregard for abiding by the mainstream.
Great comment William...she is still here
This is one of the best songs of all time.
You'll be sorely missed, it's incredible how tortured she was, and dismissed, yet she was correct well before anyone else had a clue. RIP
Your voice is haunting, and powerful, much like your shadow will be.

And she, and her honesty, will be sorely missed.
RIP to an amazing, but troubled talent xx
RIP Sinead, your earthly troubles are now over.

For the generation before, no doubt Barbra holds the title.

streisand was born in 1942, not 1950's.
May her music live on
Loved her. 😢
so sad, she's gone too soon.
So sorry for this loss.... My deepest respect for you Sinéad, you'll be missed
So sad she passed away today :(
a voice, and a delivery, like no other. I've been a huge fan ever since her first album came out.

Think I liked her music better when she WAS more controversial! Seems her style has changed enough to notice. Like her voice but, what she's putting out these latter years, doesn't seem as good as earlier years. IMO, of course.

Grace Slick > Barbra Streisand
the Voice, the Voice, the Voice !!!!!
- made from pain and hurt and anger and beauty and strength and passion... and lots of other stuff :)
No f**kin' around with this one - she gets straight at it!

There are few people that deserve to say "I told you so" more than Sinéad O'Connor.  As of 2020, there has been more than 6700 clergy credibly accused of sexual assault in the US alone.

I agree. The fact that she narc'ed Shane McGowan out as a reflection of character does not mean she's not a good singer. The fact that she then went on a press campaign following Shane's arrest and talked about her concern for Shane, how horrible heroin is, and her desire to help him by informing on him. Certainly the part of heroin is true. But I suspect she was more animated by the attention, not concern for Shane.

For the few young ones out there, Shane is an Irish National Treasure and former lead singer in The Pogues. But again, good pipes.
Pure Magic!

Bill,
Coming out of this song you mention it may be your favorite Sinead O'Connor song. I still like "Emperor's New Clothes" better but "Thief" is at 2.

Thanks for being in charge of rolling the tunes.
Wonderful. This is what music and song in particular is all about: passionate and emotional.
What a loss to the World, Sinéad O'Connor laid to rest yesterday (8.8.23).

Never thought I would say this but I like Sinead O’Connor

Got her from this album and loved her since Evermore on ya S.o’C 10/10

Overrated?!  Maybe overhated, but definitely not overrated.  One of many people that could just lay low and set the world on fire with her music.  Not her style though...she sets it on fire in other ways and it overshadows her music.  Sad, but she is an artist and activist (not to mention tortured by her past).  I get it (as much as a regular Joe can)
In the days of my youth... didn't get her. My how my taste of music has grown.  Been listening here since I believe 2004 might have something to do with it... lol.  Fell in love with her voice, passion, power and her voice .Love it! Just Like Loreena McKennitt and so many others just... music for the soul...
This track comes up regularly on RP--only 3 times in the last month? But it grabs me every time. Some people have terrible voices, but can sing up a storm. (Dylan or John Hiatt, anyone?) Others have good voices but aren't particularly good singers. (No examples come to mind, but you know what I mean.) Ms. O'Connor is that wonderful combination of voice and talent. I wish her all the best in her life.
Love this song - go on Sinead - belt it out for your fans and detractors!
and turn a blind eye to the thief of your heart..  I know I have. I love her for her passion be it original or a cover.

Um, I think the point here is that he or she looked at the Daniel Day Lewis cover photo and made a terrible association.  After recognizing the mistake hoped more espresso would somehow help.

Gotta say I'm now confused. Not like I've ever tried (or wanted) to keep up with Shapeshifter O'Connor. No one could anyway. But having words (?), throwing sand in a sandbox (?)  with Miley Cyrus kinda blew right by me. Pity. But not even worth a Google.

that's mad, I didn't exactly the same thing in The Savoy in Dublin, I get chills when I hear this. the opening song as well by Gavin Friday and Bono , leading up to the bomb in the pub, jesus christ, shocked everyone in the cinema.

If you like rarish Sinnead tracks, listen to her version of Silent Night - with good headphones or sound system.
I saw the movie in 1993 and really liked the music so I bought the CD.

Singing-wise, I guess opinions can vary, but Sinead's a much better cook than Miley.  You've got to try her Orange-Poppyseed scones - they're awesome.

Certainly one of them.  I think Bjork is more innovative and playful but the dark Celtic heritage and heartfelt nature of Sinead's singing is more powerful.

Compelling, as always.
Just the kind of mood I'm on on this cloudy Black Friday.
Notwithstanding all the controversy in her life, Sinéad is still a highly underrated and talented musician.
When I go there, I go there with you.
Right now, jeez, this is massively depressing. NEXT!
Despite her personal issues (we all have some), an amazing, unique talent.  I wish the best for her.

Why don't artists can have their privacy? Or someone wanted to schedule a promotional case? ;-))
