He was dressed to thrill, wherever he went
He said: Let's make love on a mountain top
Under the stars on a big hard rock
I said: In these shoes?
I don't think so
I said: Honey, let's do it here
So I'm sitting at a bar in Guadalajara
In walks a guy with a faraway look in his eyes
He said: I've got a poweful horse outside
Climb on the back, I'll take you for a ride
I know a little place, we can get there for the break of day
I said: In these shoes?
No way, Jose
I said: Honey, let's stay right here
No le gusta caminar No puede montar a caballo
''(She doesn't like to walk, she can't ride a horse)''
Como se puede bailar - es un escandolo
''(How she can dance - it's outrageous!)''
Then I met an Englishman
Oh, he said...
Won't you walk up and down my spine
It makes me feel strangely alive
I said: In these shoes?
I doubt you'd survive
I said: Honey, let's do it!
Let's stay right here
No le gusta caminar No puede montar a caballo
''(She doesn't like to walk, she can't ride a horse)''

Loving those horns, loving the languages, loving the swhishing beat. Love you Kristy!

Killed by a speedboat driven too fast, in a restricted area by a controversial figure in Mexico, either a supermarket magnate or his deck hand, depending on who you believe, but in either case: if you plead guilty to homicide in Mexico you can buy your way out of it for a little more than $2k US. I guess .. think twice before going to Mexico.
Loved her music - think of her every Christmas when the Pogues are played. ❤️
Completely agree!
Its just terrible
How sad for you.
got to say I'm not a fan

The USA where:
-the flag of treason flies freely
- the former President is a Russian "asset"
Suck it up.
Any Catherine Tate fans here on RP?
"Oh, 'ere we f*c$%ng go!"
I first heard this song on a commercial radio station in Chicago (WXRT), believe it or not. Thank you RP for carrying on!
Before discovering RP one of my favs was XRT, that and WDEK in the 70's thru mid '80's before when they went Top 40. Long live RP!
I'd dance, but in these shoes??
Still chair dancing.
got to say I'm not a fan
No, you actually didn't.
It's a Cuban song. I think it was composed by
Compay Segundo
just looked it up It was a song by a Porto Rican American Jazz Artist that goes by the name of Willie Bobo the tracks name is Spanish grease.
Guajira is a very common Cuban term so it may have been taken from something else though
None that stoop to the level of "decent." But these to me are outstanding—Mambo de la Luna, Nao Esperando, Alegria/Alegria 2. The rest of the disc is merely good.
The whole album is great
wait, Same Kirsty as Fairytale of New York with Shane?
Yep and from the same family as Ewan ("The 1st time ever I saw your face" "Dirty old town" fame)

WXRT is one of the few commercial stations that i bother to still listen too
Compay Segundo
So true!!

Kirsty has some brilliant songs and she is able to switch between sharply observed social commentary to comedy, effortlessly. If you like this try the album
I 2nd that!
This is a Signature Radio Paradise (SRP) song.
If I hear this song, I know I'm listening to Radio Paradise.

wait that's just what happened again...
I'd be fascinated to know what other things you've noticed that aren't actually happening.
No le gusta caminar > She doesn't like to walk
No puede montar a caballo > She can't ride on horseback
Cómo se puede bailar > How ist it possible to dance
Es un escándalo > It's a scandal
Maybe, I'm not sure, the two latter lines are meant as one: How it is possible to dance, remains a scandal. Almost sounds like standard salsa lyrics, if such do actually exist. Don't ask me for possible second meanings, please.
What really makes it for me, is the languish way she moans No way, José!
Thanks for translating and posting! Makes me like this sultry/goofy song even more: 8 -> 9. Must check out her other stuff...haven't caught Bill playing the four other KM songs in the RP catalog.
"you're not in your element" twice
Sad note to a fun song but she died as a true hero. Most musician / artist tragedies are much more selfish....

As the group was surfacing from a dive, a speeding powerboat entered the restricted area. MacColl saw the boat coming before her sons did; Louis was not in the boat's path, but Jamie was. She was able to push him out of the way (he sustained minor head and rib injuries) but in doing so, she was hit by the boat and killed instantly.

No le gusta caminar. No puede montar a caballo
(She don't like to walk. She can't ride a horse)
Como se puede bailar? Es un escandalo
(How can she be dancing? It scandalous! )

Indeed. I start enjoying this song and then remember what happened to her, and it makes me pause. So sad.
Possibly her best...certainly her most fun-beach-Carribean song...
Thanks

Funny I heard it as,
doesn't walk... doesn't ride... doesn't dance (how's she going to dance) it's a scandal
I like it either way
I feckin' love this song, and never tire of it. The world is a poorer place without Kirsty McColl, right enough. A rare 10 from the grinning Nottingham jury.
LOL!!!
So does everybody in my office. WOOOHOOOO!
I've clearly underestimated Kirsty MacColl. Once again RP educates me and broadens my horizons.
THAT WAS FUNNY!!!
As I've always said, why tell a good joke when a bad one will do?
"So I'm sitting at a bar in Guadalajara
In walks a guy with a faraway look in his eyes
He said "I've got as powerful horse outside
Climb on the back, I'll take you for a ride
I know a little place, we can get there for the break of day."
I said "In these shoes?
Let me guess: The two of them walk out to the horse, and the horse looks at them and says, "In these shoes?".

Very profound... good shoes are one of the great secrets of life... this song is cool...
you get what you pay for!

..i sense a shoe theme..you're dead if you don't dance in your chair to this.
Thank the goddesses I'm not dead - I don't have a chair, but I did dance... And the lyrics I provided are SO incorrect, so if someone can find a semi-literate person who provides lyrics, and if that someone would post them here, I'd be pretty damned happy in life.

He said "Let's make love on a mountain top
Under the stars on a big hard rock"

Love this song but why not give some of her early stuff a swing. Like for example her sappily titled first hit single; "There's a guy works down the chip shop swears he's Elvis" or the Billy Bragg song "A New England" or even "Don't come the cowboy with me Sonny Jim"
You need to meet my new guy.
"Diving in Cozumel? In these flippers?
"Sure, why not?
"...Oops!"
(Sorry; that was uncalled for!)
I don't think you would survive .
ohh not good
Phwoar! Wouldn't I? Put it on YouTube, I dare ya!
This song makes me think of the old English comic, Lesley Phillips. Ding dong!
(sigh) There's always someone got to drop a turd on the table during the banquet ;-(
Fred, you have a wonderful way with words!!
