Yeah!
His guitar slung across his back
His dusty boots, and as his Cadillac,
A-flamin hair just a-blowin' in the wind
Ain't see a bed in so long it's a sin,

He left home when he was seventeen,
The rest of the world he had longed to see-ah
And everybody who knows, boss,
A rolling stone gathers no moss!

Now you'd probably call him a tramp,
But it goes a little deeper than that!
He's a highway chile, yeah!

Now some people say he had a girl back home
Who messed him around and did him pretty wrong
They me tell it kind of hurt him bad
Kinda made him feel pretty sad

I couldn't say what went through his mind
Anyway, he left the world behind-ah
And everybody knows the same old story
In love and war you can't lose with glory

Now you'd probably, uh, call him a tramp, but uh,
I know it goes a little deeper than that
He's a highway chile!

Walk on, brother
Yeah! Whoa, yeah
Walk on down the highway

His old guitar slung across his back
His dusty boots as his Cadillac
Flamin' hair just a-blowin' in the wind
Ain't seen a bed in so long it's a sin

Now you probably call him a tramp,
But I know it goes a little deeper than that!
He's a highway chile!

Walk on brother
Don't let no one stop you
Highway chile
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Highway chile
Rolling stone
Go on down the highway, go ahead on
Highway chile
Yeah, yeah
Highway chile
Yeah, hey
Ow!

Interesting, it was released on the UK version of Smash Hits (but not the US version, according to Wikipedia). I'd always thought it was dug up after 1970, as a B track that didn't make the original cut...

Quite true. Jimi was a phreak about perfection, and wouldn't release something until he was darn satisfied with the final cut.I have a slew of albums and CDs, all stuff released after his death. Then you look, Jimi released 3 studio albums, Smash Hits, and Band of Gypsies (the latter which Jimi released only because of a contractual obligation). Then we got Cry of Love, which were songs that were "in the can" when he passed.

It's interesting to read about how Jimi would continuously cut new tracks for songs that were "in the can." All Along the Watchtower was one in particular I remember reading about—it was driving folks crazy, to the point that even Noel walked out once because he couldn't take much more of it!

Still, Jimi's B movies are still worth listening to, Highway Chile included...

Jimi was such a bada$$ guitarist.  And he could sing decently.  He was no Freddie Mercury, but hey, his primary voice was the guitar!
On my way home from work in down town Van, I pass an old house turned into a dedicated Jimi Hendrix shrine. The place is shrouded in weed and incense smoke.
Airborne!
I seem to recall hearing he didn't want to sing when the group formed, but was talked into it.
On 'Spanish castle Magic' you can hear him say "I can't sing this song".

Sorry, he had a WONDERFUL voice. When this came out, I thought that he was mysteriously singing about me. At 16, clearly too "experienced."

Did you ever notice that Jimi's heritage is not his voice but his ...guitarplaying? Doh!
Good to know he finally put out a new album

Over rated. Jim's not a good singer.
I was 12 when this came out and much too young to appreciate Jimi.
Noisy No? I think this is staggering under the weight of time. {#Headache}

It appears on the remastered versions from the 90s (both the Alan Douglas and the Experience Hendrix ones).  There is some claim here that it was on some sort of "original" release, and it was recorded at the right time as the B side of The Wind Cries Mary single, but I can find no evidence of it coming out on an LP until '72s War Heros.

This is not from my "Are You Experienced" LP! Must be a CD bonus....

IMO this is one of the greatest albums of 20th century rock. Why isn't "Are You Experienced?" (the song) ever played here though?!

if only this had been voodoo chile instead of highway chile it would have been an 11 instead of a mere 8.

Isn't the fad of being deliberately off-putting over yet?
It was definitely an interesting time. It's still the music that gets my blood pumping. Actually I appreciate Hendrix much more now than I did then. My taste had to grow up. exciter76 wrote:

You remind me of Howard Stern....you show up in way too many places, make comments that are meant to cause an emotional reaction just for the pure sicko factor and you can't be removed because you fly just below the, "Let's get him off this post forum" radar. Insert smart-ass reply HERE:

Anyone out there experienced with highway chile? I like Hendrix's drummer.
In the it's a small world stakes, I was having a root canal done today and my Dentist casually mentioned that as a boy he was occasionally employed to set up Mitch Mitchell's drums (Mitchell, ultimately, was the musician with whom Hendrix had the most important and sustained creative relationship, out of the many people that Hendrix led or supported, onstage and on record quote AMG)
