still dark out and I'm grading 6th graders' writing projects...along come the Rolling Stones...NOW I'm bopping, and their grades just got ALOT mo'betta Here comes the sun...Stevie Ray Vaugh with Tell Me A+++++++s all around
MICK!! Just who I needed right now. Especially mixed with blues harmonica. Two great tastes that taste great together. This one may be new and "unoriginal" but it's comfortable and just makes me smile. Now I just need to hear Factory Girl and my day might turn out to be ok.

Bigger Bang is very good, still the Stones may be long past their best music. But a mature Jagger can write lyrics he probably never would have thought of when he was 23. For those who may not know, "Goya" is Francisco Goya, a Spanish Artist in the early 1800's. After two serious illnesses left him deaf and delusional, he created a series of prints and paintings of ghastly and terrifying images collectively known as "Goya's Paranoias". Probably the most famous, named Saturn Devouring One of His Children, hangs in the Prado Museum in Madrid. Very interesting and clever that they would put this line in a retro-blues tune, imo. Back to your regularly scheduled programming...
well....I have to admit that, even if this it's not brilliant like old stone's production until the 70's... anyway this is the best R.S. album in at least 20 years!....not bad for the most famous rock and roll grandfathers of the world!

Compared to the shite on the market today, & there's plenty of it, the gig is alright....
I thought it was something off Exile or Beggar's Banquet....Pretty good...
Hey -- seems to me like I recall this song following that Lindley/Naser "Tijuana" cover a while back.. I'm betting that "Salty Dog" is coming up soon....

Sorry but for me the last good Stones record was Some Girls (and that one can be played many many more times without losing luster)...
I'm good through Tattoo You (which of course was a compilation of old tracks) with a couple of tunes from Undercover thrown in for good measure. Pretty much everything else I've heard since then is crap, and believe me, as a diehard Stones fan, I wanted to like what they did and I tried. But no sale.
I'm just some kind of loyal Stones fan.
Maybe it doesn't suck as badly as their last ah, many, but -- Sorry but for me the last good Stones record was Some Girls (and that one can be played many many more times without losing luster)... I hear some soulful REM so things are looking up again...

Nice to hear them returning to what got them there.
Agreed. But it really suffers by comparison coming right after Muddy Waters.
These guys have been around for ages, and their "new" album contains nothing new, innovative, or exciting. This song sounds like a generic slow blues-stomp kinda track. Come on, boys, you really shook things up years ago - what gives?

Excellent.

WOW this is new stuff! Sounds just as good as the rest.

Mari, we need you to stick around. You choose the best snippets of lyrics to post for us, and I appreciate the time and thought it takes!!
Forty plus years into a legendary career and the Stones do this! BB is certainly not their best work, but it's very good, and it is so uplifting, to me anyway, to hear this very fine release. Can they go forever?
Reminds me of the Beggars Banquet album (cat scratch fever ET all) Was really the first of the Rolling Stones I really really liked and could play along with my guitar For the longest time I thought they should hang them up until I heard this... this works for me... and its nice to hear them do what I always thought was perfect for them The blues

I'm hearing the same thing, which is a mixed blessing. This isn't bad, but it really sounds (to my ears) like a rather pale remake of those other two tunes you mentioned, which then hurts my rating of the song. Would love to hear that live rendition of Mannish Boy, or anything from the El Mocambo side of Love You Live (which was just about the only worthwhile bit of that album ... I always wished they'd just ditched all the overblown stadium cuts and gone with nothing but the small club sets).
If ya cruise ebay you can find excellent SB live recordings from that era ... ;-)

You can critic this all you want or go look into your navel for the rest of the day, same difference. The fact of the matter is the "old" boys are smokin'!!!! I can only imagine what this sounds like live! Nasty, I hope!!!

Ah!The geriatric set.
Great segue to this tune from Muddy Waters I Just Want to Make Love to You.

You're right. And Bigger Bang is flawed--for one thing it's too long--but it is satisfying to hear some very good new music from them. To produce a work as good as BB after 40+ years of making music, is remarkable. lostintokyo wrote:

Incredible this old-men-played fresh young Blues! Seems the Stones would never get old...
Two things: that ain't no parody and Some Girls is a great album, for chrissakes.
I like the guitar. Sounds like the early Stones.

If this is a parody, do the same criteria also apply to Eric Clapton playing the blues? Great song.
Depends on what Eric Clapton track you're talking about. Some of it works, some of it doesn't.
This really grates on me for some reason. I'm not enjoying it.
Every note of this crapola chips away their legacy.
Reminds me of their classic "You Gotta Move". This record really rocks, I hesitated in picking it up but am really glad I did.

Whatever. It beats the Hell out of "Undercover"... Plus, when the Stones do a parody, they do it right. Like the "Girl with..." well, you know what kind of eyes she's got...
Yes, we do know what kind of eyes she's got. Great song (not this one) you're referring to there, Johnnyrock, and that was from an album considered to be quite "substandard" among devotees in RS history.
Lacking even the tiniest iota of originality in this cut.
This is the best stuff the Stones have done in a while... but it seems like someone went back through all their old stuff and picked out the most successful of each style and created a new song based on it. This is like the Volkswagon Beetle of music, a well designed modern interpretation of a classic.
oh yeah....a very good thing
Brutal
This is almost reminiscent of the Exile on Main Street days. And that is a GOOD THING! It has been some time since I have been able to compliment a new Stones song. It feels good!
Sounds like a cross between their live version of Mannish Boy (Love You Live) and You Gotta Move (Sticky Fingers). This reminds me in a good (bit nostalgic) way of those songs. When it comes down to it, they are and always were a (Rhythm and) Blues band in the first place.
This is the Stones? I kind of like this!!

Not too shabby--an incarnate Howlin' Wolf. Wonderin' if they could channel up a version of Under My Thumb ala Broonzy? (pimp)

I had counted these guys out long, long time ago. Took me awhile to admit it, but that's three solid cds in a row now! I saw them three tours back, at the Rose Garden, with low expectations. The show opened with harsh, blazing white, slicing the darkness, revealing Keith, decked out in leopard-print, Blues Bros. shades, erupting with fury into the opening riff of "Satisfaction." I had never heard a guitar, or anything else for that matter, sound more gritty, dirty, and evil-- Wiped the sneer right off my face!
There really is no one else like him. Often imitated, never duplicated.
