Very cool stuff. I love it when y'all find music like this.
On a cold snowy day in the middle of the pandemic, I am transported for a few minutes to a sunny spot on a remote beach, with lapping waves and cheerful people, maybe just with a hint of melancholy to make it even more of a fleeting pleasure...even thought I can't understand a word of this...thanks.
English lyrics:
It won't be easy, you'll think it's strange
When I try to explain how I feel
I still need your love after all that I've done
You won't believe me
All you will see is a girl you once knew
Although she's dressed to the nines
At sixes and sevens with you
Don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days, my mad existence
I've kept my promise, don't keep your distance
I had to let it happen, I had to change
Couldn't stay all my life down at heel
Looking out of the window, staying out of the sun
So I chose freedom
Running around, trying everything new
But nothing impressed me at all
I never expected it to
Don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days, my mad existence
I've kept my promise, don't keep your distance
Have I said too much?
There's nothing more that I can think of to say to you
All you got to do is look at me
To know that every word is true
Oh, don't cry for me Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days, my mad existence
I've kept my promise, don't keep your distance
I've kept my promise, don't keep your distance
It won't be easy, you'll think it's strange
When I try to explain how I feel
I still need your love after all that I've done
You won't believe me

This is giving me a mini island vacation, complete with food, drink & friends! Not that I could ever afford a proper vacation, but Covid has stolen even the dream of one.
Lightness, happiness!

I'll have what gjr is having.
reminds me of sitting on a beach somewhere far, far away.....sippin pina coladas in the blistering sun, trying to remember just what the hell happened the night before and why i have this category 5 hurricane raging inside my head......

What constitutes REALLY good?
Can only English speakers make good music?
Were you joking?
Just for the record, I like this a lot. Makes my heart light.
Dear RP, please do not play non-english songs unless they are really good.

Love this! Makes me feel like I'm not in the crowded, gray, dirty city I currently live in. Nice!
Sounds like the backing singers are singing something about an impotent man.
LOVE
Bought this CD a long time ago and didn't think much of it. In recent times I've grown to like it very much. Great background music for, "relaxed concentration", i.e. — drawing and other art work.
After living the past 15 years in the Caribbean and programming our music, I find the entire album quite refreshing. And this cut with Kali is tropical with an interesting lilt. The Putumayo cd's are well known to our hotel and restaurant's world-traveled guests. Not bad, really.
Hey, if it's sung by furiners then ahm prolly gonna like it! Great album cover too!

Just an FYI that Putumayo only sells CDs, not downloads. I am not sure why, but it is probably related to their selling CDs in unusual places like gift shops and Whole Foods. On the plus side, they are known for being timely and fair in paying the artists royalties, something that is unfortunately not the case for many record labels.
I love the "Islands" CD among many other well compiled and edited Putumayo CDs.

Is it Portuguese?
Kali (Jean-Luc Monnerville) is from Martinique and sings in French and Creole. There's enough French in this to make me think it's a Creole-influenced local patois if not pure Creole. Here's a link to a review of the CD:

BTW, I don't think that's French, but I haven't researched it. 5 years of French in school didn't help here. Looks like something else, DK, but it doesn't look like French.

I'm a strictly neutral 6 on this one.

First of all, this is island music. It is sung in French, but does not reflect pop/rock music in France today, in my opinion.
A generation ago I thought French music was embarassingly insipid. Now there is a lot going on musically - a lot of good stuff being produced. (And I am really sorry that 'Les Tambours du Bronx' don't exist anymore. Not for RP listeners, perhaps, but very exciting.)
every french song sounds exactly the same to me...same beat, same soppy romantic sound. Aren't there any french-speaking punk bands? Or metal? Or country?

A good solid 3 from me.

Hey, now. Not everyone from Texas is intolerant. Unless you're intolerable. This track isn't intolerable, but milquetoast comes to mind. 6 it is.

I don't like that this kind of bickering makes the top of the thumbs up list. I listen to the World/Eclectic station very often but I can see that the person didn't mean that "only English speakers make good music". Both are dumb comments. I guess this is what we have to endure in order to find the nuggets of good info that people share.
