Baby, baby, baby, let me talk to you
I just love to whisper in your sexy ear
Tell you that I love you, take away your fear
Destroy your inhibitions, ridin' back the day
Low-down, slow down, keeping low down in that funky way
Higher, higher, higher, how high can you go
Ride me high this morning, ride me high some more
The way you move your body, it is a crying shame
I won't tell nobody if you will do the same
If you leave tomorrow, one thing that's for sure
The more you get, the more you've got, the more you want some more
Higher, higher, higher, how high can you go
Ride me high this morning, ride me high some more
Higher, higher, higher, how high can you go
Ride me high this morning, ride me high some more
There are the JJ 'chug' tracks and the JJ 'snarl' tracks. This is one of the latter. There is also a one-off 'Durango' where he goes off to Alpha Centauri for 5 mins+ instead of his usual 3 mins or less- I'd love to find out who changed his normal weed for skunk. Shame there isn't more of that in his ouvre. I have it all and find that there are no rejects, although there are some weaker moments (Humdinger).
I liken his voice to cranberry juice or lapsang souchong - an acquired addictive huskiness.
Thanks a million for the mention of "Durango!" Found it on YouTube and it matches your description. Mr Cale was a master of his guitar.
Everyone dies. That doesn't make him a better performer. He was a great songwriter. I personally wouldn't have walked across the street to hear him play live.
Sorry, that's just how I feel...
Don't apologize. JJ Cale and the Tulsa Sound are unique. Eric Clapton proved it when he followed JJ Cale around Tulsa attempting to replicate the sound. He failed but offered "Living on Tulsa Time" as a substitute. And don't worry about walking across the street. Were he still alive, you wouldn't be able to find a seat at the venue.
Like them or not , you can't slam certain artists.
Makes you look silly.
JJ Cale, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Grateful Dead, and even Elvis Costello to name a few of the obvious.
There are at least two artists in that list that I don't care for and usually press the forward button on, but yes they are highly talented.
Done!

Certainly not failures as they are highly respected, but not always my cup of tea. There are two artists on your list that I usually skip when played on the station. I won't name them.

What a lovely tribute to the man.

Doesn't change anything. Great songwriter, horrible performer. Simply sucks, I can't wait until it's over.
What a lovely tribute to the man.
I got in to JJ way back when because of Clapton, and while I'm a HUGE fan of EC's work and all the variations on guitar playing, I really like how steady JJ was (RIP) with his playing. One of the things I like on this track is the very subtle addition of a few guitar notes, and did I hear a triangle in there too?
I'm bumping my 8 to a 9 today.
Just had to bump this Cynaera post.
Hoping that she and JJ are groovin' together right now.
10x10 ...... will that do ya!!?
If you really want to learn to play lead guitar, play along to some JJ albums.
Okay - catching a groove here - gotta float with it. Hugs to all the RP folks....

Sophomore at Clarion, Ballentine Hall, room 302.
Didn't realize at the time that Eric Clapton owed his career to JJ.
We played the grooves off of Troubador and Slowhand.
Ditto.
I just love how laid back his groove is.
Interesting comment Joe - my experience has been to throw JJ LPs on the old record player after I got home from work.
leave the lights off and watch the setting sun envelope you in darkness.
Try it - kick back on the couch - close your eyes...groove on
Lay down Sally...
Considering the tremendous influence J. J. had on Clapton, I'm certain this song was in Clapton's head when, after spending years covering J. J.'s songs in an effort to master his Tulsa sound, Clapton decided to write his own J.J Cale style song, "Lay Down Sally."
In fact, in order to emulate J. J.'s sound, Clapton hired Tulsa musicians to record the song, saying, "It's as close as I can get, being English, but the band being a Tulsa band, they play like that naturally."
