My old man is another child that's grown old
If dreams were lightning thunder was desire
This old house would have burnt down a long time ago
Chorus:
Make me an angel that flies from Montgom'ry
Make me a poster of an old rodeo
Just give me one thing that I can hold on to
To believe in this living is just a hard way to go
When I was a young girl well, I had me a cowboy
He weren't much to look at, just free rambling man
But that was a long time and no matter how I try
The years just flow by like a broken down dam.
Repeat Chorus
There's flies in the kitchen I can hear 'em there buzzing
And I ain't done nothing since I woke up today.
How the hell can a person go to work in the morning
And come home in the evening and have nothing to say.
Repeat Chorus
Mr. Prine, man, I first was made aware of him watching Austin City Limits away long time ago on public television... his show was great writtin word, super real voice, laughing one song and then silent sobbing to the next.
Ms. Raitt is an angel
Well said. Thanks!
Bonnie is 74 and still dead sexy.
Absolutely...voice makes it happen
Bill you must play Steve Goodman, please. So much good material
Agreed.
This is great though. Raitt's voice is sublime.
In the early 70s I used to play John Prine on a regular basis.
some of the most beautiful, profound, and mystical lyrics ever written.
And John P was a postman!
So, there s still hope for me!
One of the few songs that anyone sings and I absolutely love.
She is the real deal.

Ab-so-lute-ly! So much good material that isn't City of New Orleans (which is excellent, just played a lot). Talking Backwards, Men Who Love Women (Who Love Men), A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request to name a few.
It's the little things isn't it? Such is how history is made.

True. In the spirit of Steve, as a tribute - absolutely!
"John Prine, who is sitting right over there, wrote 'Angel From Montgomery' and so many other songs that changed my life," Raitt said. Raitt told Uncut magazine that "as a young feminist, the idea that this young man could inhabit the world of a middle-aged woman in a thankless marriage really resonated with me."

What a loverly well Matured ''Cheese'' as well ..if you gonna have cheese this is the way to savour it... gets my vote.

Actually the 'cheese' remark referred to a different song than this one, and one that did not even involve Ms. Raitt or Mr. Prine. See remarks below. There is no cheese anywhere on this gorgeous tune.

Lovely rendition
But I still find it hard to forgive Bonnie for her collaboration with Meatloaf
Er, different Bonnie (Bonnie Tyler). The audio file linked below is mislabeled. Thankfully...

It is no lie. Cheesiest. Song. Ever.

What? When was that?

Every once in awhile Bill plays 'Sam Stone'. My all-time fave JP tune is 'Muhlenberg County', but he has so many great songs. One of the best songwriters ever.

This is great

Among many other lyrical gems in this song, my favorite is:
If dreams were lightning, thunder was desire
This old house would have burnt down a long time ago

Yes. Exactly.

Mr. Prine is ALWAYS a kick in the pants.! Oh YEAH!!!
(He wrote it?! WOW!)
I love hearing this song almost as much as I like singing it.

John Prine and Bonnie Raitt - Angel from Montgomery ==> Wilco - Sky Blue Sky ==> The Band - The Weight (With The Staples) ==> Joan Armatrading - Baby Blue Eyes ==> Oi Va Voi - I Know What You Are ==> Butch Baldassari Trio - As Far As I Can See ==> Outback - An Dro Nevez
!Magnificent!
Here are the lyrics
I am an old woman named after my mother
