Watching the coast
Suddenly I know
What I want the most
And I want to tell you
Still I hold back
I need some time
Get my life on track
I know that look on your face
But there's somethin' lucky about this place
And there's somethin' good comin'
For you and me
Somethin' good comin'
There has to be
And I'm thinking 'bout mama
And about the kids
And the way we lived
And the things we did
How she never had a chance
Never caught a break
And how we pay for our big mistakes
I know so well the look on your face
And there's somethin' lucky about this place
There's somethin' good comin'
Just over the hill
Somethin' good comin'
I know it will
And I'm in for the long run
Wherever it goes
Ridin' the river
Wherever it goes
And I'm an honest man
Work's all I know
You take that away
Don't know where to go
And I know that look that's on your face
There's somethin' lucky about this place
There's somethin' good comin'
For you and me
Somethin' good comin'
There has to be
why does this song make me sad?
I can see that. It has a melancholy feel to it - but somehow uplifting. Like a wistful optimism in there?
I miss you.
It must be true because someone said they heard it somewhere.
Just look how he treated his bandmates for confirmation. Undeniable knob.
Tom Petty was another musician who I somehow passed by without listening, until Radio Paradise, through repeated exposures, led me to recognize how good he was. Not many can write something like this and make it work. I suspect he saw himself as in some way maintaining the type of perspective on his culture as Woody Guthrie. I don't suggest much more similarity than that, but this particular song has that sense of striving for an American success, despite the array of obstacles. It could be in the Florida panhandle or Oklahoma.
Unbelievable comment, or at least hard to believe. Tom Petty is an expression of the America that I can still love. Anybody who has driven anywhere in a pick-up truck should know.
If you come to FLA take time to go out to Cedar Key and just sit and breathe.
Can't help but remember the last things my mom said to me as she passed from cancer... I was in Tokyo, hoping to get back to see her one more time... We'd remained in touch, but so much family drama had forced distance and estrangement along every branch of the tree... She said, "It hasn't always been good for you, has it? But I tell you something, honey -- there's something good coming, you'll see." I realize that the times I truly felt hopeless were the worst. Hope is like gravity; without it we cannot be rooted nor present in the moment, without which we cannot move forward at all...
Thank you for this sincere and well expressed reminder.
I wanna write her name in the sky
I'm gonna free fall out into nothin'
Gonna leave this world for awhile"
yep.

Ohio has put the whammy on a lot of people it seems.
Hey Ho Way to go
I saw them in Columbus, Ohio a couple of weeks ago. A very disappointing show. They just phoned it in. It may be a while before I listen to Tom. In general I think that their records are great but that concert put a damper on that.

trying to figure out how to post comments? Did this work?
Nope.
Imagine a world in which this beautiful song were a top 40 hit. What world would that be? A lot better one.
It must have been frustrating for so many of the rockers from the last century to no longer be able to reach their audiences through mainstream radio. Many of them seemed to have either given up or faded away, but Tom Petty continued to put out original tunes and top quality music until the end of his much-too-short life.
Not bad for a coke head. No disrespect to the dead but he was kind of a knob.
No disrespect to the dead, itsme_bygolly writes, and then spunks its ill-informed disrespectful opinion all over the internet. Unless you knew him personally of course? Thought not.

Well we don't always get the chance. Miss you Tom.
Absolutely friend. Tell that to the chumps that are now pushing the Carey and Bieber "duet" down our throats this festive time.
Like the wind, a great meal. or a fine song, Tom vanished from our world. But oh the memories.....

That's too bad. I know he cancelled some shows in August due to Laryngitis. He sure rocked the arena when I saw him a couple of years ago.

As we now know, Tom was dealing with some serious health issues all summer but decided to just plow through. RIP.

Me, too. Could it be his voice, drained of all happiness and optimism, declaring that there's something good coming?
Totally agree
This tale capturing pain and longing. Gorgeous.
Yes, indeed. Great song.

I SEE ABSOLUTELY NO LOGIC HERE!
NONE!!

Are you familiar with what is called in statistics a "normal distribution"? Like a bell-curve? You are not by any means the only person rating songs at RP with a strange rating distribution. I don't rate on a curve, personally, I let the chips fall where they may and try to reserve the 1-rating for songs I really dislike. But the fact you have such a high number of "sucko-barfo" ratings is surprising. Like I said, a lot of people here have similar distributions. You are not alone.

This year is gone and done.
It wasn't good.
It wasn't fun.
I'm hoping to see a better one.
Amen, brother; you and me both.

The man is incredibly consistent. He's been writing great songs for decades. Gotta love Tom.
That's it, the world must be ending this year. Proof? I agreed with a post by Stingray.
Holy Crap! Me too.
Petty describes the new album, not yet titled, "as kind of like Mojo – to a new power. It's not as strict to the blues as that one is. But everything comes from the blues, and we've found something new – a new way to stamp the blues."
The album is also "born the same way as Mojo," he goes on, "where we perform everything together, with very little futzing around with it after it's done. But more than anything else, it's about the songs. Writing a song is such a gift from God. You have to be patient and attentive, and I gotta stay at it a lot. But things turn up, and when they do, it's exciting and makes you want to go back and try it again."
So far, Petty and the Heartbreakers have cut a dozen songs for the new record. "And of those, I hear six that I'm sure about," he says with obvious delight. "There may be more, but I'm definitely sure of those." He laughs again. "If I'm sure about one, that's exciting."
It was this album, rdo, that turned my thoughts around on TP. I truly enjoy this album and song - I ended up buying it; the only TP album I own.
You mean like Bob Dylan?
Agreed
Oh, come on, he has a wide musical, lyrical and thematic range, And whole bunch of widely varied album/cd releases to prove it
I'm with you on this one. TP is more than a one-song-style wonder. This song supports the point. How is this anything like "American Girl"? Or "Free Falling"? It's not. But if you're tone deaf it may be hard to tell the difference.
And I know the person who knows Tom's first cousin!
5 bucks for my autograph!
Ding Ding Ding We Have A Winnah!!!
True, but he's done it earnestly. It's more like five songs, really.

Thanks Rabbi, I needed that. Not that I necessarily agree...but that's funny as hell.
Thx TP
no.
Tom can actually sing...
It just has to.
Puzzling hmm...
I luv you Tom Petty. This song is so beautiful.
The typical TP chord progression. Laaaaaaame.
Are you really complaining that a Tom Petty song sounds like a Tom Petty song?
And your point is??
