The war was lost
The treaty signed
I was not caught
I crossed the line

I was not caught
Though many tried
I live among you
Well disguised

I had to leave
My life behind
I dug some graves
You'll never find

The story's told
With facts and lies
I had a name
But never mind

Never mind
Never mind
The war was lost
The treaty signed

There's truth that lives
And truth that dies
I don't know which
So never mind

Your victory
Was so complete
That some among you
Thought to keep

A record of
Our little lives
The clothes we wore
Our spoons our knives

The games of luck
Our soldiers played
The stones we cut
The songs we made

Our law of peace
Which understands
A husband leads
A wife commands

And all of this
Expressions of
The Sweet Indifference
Some call Love

The High Indifference
Some call Fate
But we had Names
More intimate

Names so deep and
Names so true
They're blood to me
They're dust to you

There is no need
That this survive
There's truth that lives
And truth that dies

Never mind
Never mind
I live the life
I left behind

There's truth that lives...

I could not kill
The way you kill
I could not hate
I tried I failed

You turned me in
At least you tried
You side with them
Whom you despise

This was your heart
This swarm of flies
This was once your mouth
This bowl of lies

You serve them well
I'm not surprised
You're of their kin
You're of their kind

Never mind
Never mind
The story's told
With facts and lies
You own the world
So never mind

Never mind
Never mind
I live the life
I left behind

I live it full
I live it wide
Through layers of time
You can't divide

My woman's here
My children too
Their graves are safe
From ghosts like you

In places deep
With roots entwined
I live the life I left behind

Somewhere, I read that he said if he couldn't keep recording, he'd die.

I wouldn't mind at all if he joined Bowie and Frey at this point. I'm ready.

Well that's a bit callous especially since he recently talked about being ready to die and then had to publicly explain that he didn't want to die.

Thanks for the torture.

Exactly, can't buy into his brand of pseudo bs.

Season 2 True Detective:  riveting but dark.

So what do folks think of this CD?

My thoughts exactly as soon as this came on. Did he not see this also? Not every hit leaves the infield.

No.
Last play: Sep 21, 2015.  Plays in last 30 days: 7.  This is really bad.  Maybe playing 7 times in 30 days is a little much.
Love it!

Leonard, it's time to turn off those microphones.

This blows!

OK. Nevermind, indeed.
Blaaah
Yay, Leonard Cohen! Time for a bathroom break.
Such beautiful expression of poetic genius.  Sorry that I can't follow the pop culture perspective below.  Reading those comments from over here sounds like Leggos criticizing Frank Lloyd Wright.  Each has its own place and possibly a need to learn anew to appreciate.
I hated this song first, but it grew on me after I saw all 8 episodes of True Detective 's season 2.
Although season 1 was way better, season 2 had some pretty good moments.
I don't get it. A big fat thumbs down.
YO! Leonard Cohen Raps!
Best part of season 2 of TD was the opening title sequence.
Groan....

Now that you mention it, the vocals are very similar throughout.

Personally, on it's own, I think it's so-so.  BUT...  Put this in the context of TD Season 2 story line?  Different story.  Maybe T-Bone should get some credit for the match-up?

Gosh, I might be tempted to watch the second season just for this song. I loved the first season (though the ending was truncated I think) AND the them song.
I respect Leonard Cohen, but always a "1" for me sorry to say...  I guess you either love his "singing" or hate it...
Opening theme for season 2 True Detective. It has been growing on me.
: )
Leonard's voice in this sounds a bit like Frank Zappa's voice in the torture never stops.
Thanks Bill,

Letter from inside my life, hidden among the lies I tell myself.
I guess that's why he has such appeal; He speaks to all our inner being, or maybe from inside.
