Trudging slowly over wet sand, back to the bench
Where your clothes were stolen
This is the coastal town that they forgot to close down
Armageddon, come Armageddon, come Armageddon, come

Everyday is like Sunday, everyday is silent and gray
Hide on the promenade scratch out a postcard
And how I dearly wish I was not here
In the seaside town that they forgot to bomb
Come, come, come, nuclear bomb

Everyday is like Sunday, everyday is silent and gray
Trudging back over pebbles and sand
And a strange dust lands on your hands and on your face
On your face, on your face, on your face

Everyday is like Sunday, win yourself a cheap tray
Share some greased tea with me, everyday is silent and grey
Everyday is like Sunday, everyday is like Sunday
Everyday is like Sunday, everyday is like Sunday

This doesn't have the weary miserabilism and weltschmerz of yer man's original. Chrissie Hynde is way too positive and rocky for this dirge.

Didn't know you guys are using 'Weltschmerz'.
Can agree though.

The Pretenders do quite the justice on this cover. Beautiful version. Slide guitar is so relaxing.  Gives me calm ☺️

Chrissy could sing the phone book to me and I'd get squirmy.

Abso-fking-lutely amen.

There are not enough halls of fame for Chrissie. Great and great and great.
Just the sound of Christie’s voice evokes poignant memories from the 1970s
Chrissy could sing the phone book to me and I'd get squirmy.
I don't think anyone can beat the original but this is pretty good....
skip!

Hmm. Much as I like  Chrissie, this is pretty anodyne. Much as I hate Morrissey as a reactionary neo-fascist prick, this song encapsulated his weltschmertz and has become a morbid classic. Good effort, Chrissie, but you don't have Mozza's miserableness.

I just had to go look up those words.

anodyne - not likely to provoke dissent or offense; inoffensive, often deliberately so (from an archaic word for painkillers)
weltschmerz - sadness or melancholy at the evils of the world; world-weariness

The song always reminds me of Withernsea on the E Yorkshire coast, which should have been closed down decades ago.

Personally i can't stand the Smiths myself, and this song didn't get any better for me with Chrissie singing it.

Never been to Withernsea, Fred, won't be going either, but a quick glance at the lyrics and i'm thinking surely you meant "should have been nuked..."?
Greetings from Bournemouth
Sounds way too much like a Pretenders song
Excellent!
Whilst I love this one I always thought the line about winning a cheap tray was a bit weak. Am I missing a deeper meaning or is it, as I suspect, just a few words that happen to fit and rhyme?

The increasing normalization of science denial and racism has ruined a number of artists for me, and I find it harder to ignore for musicians than for actors. For example, I love Van Morrison's previous work, but when you feel you need to write "protest songs" against effective Coronavirus responses, you can piss all the way off.

Hey Van can do as he pleases. He has created more in joy in this world than you and your self serving opinions will ever do.
I'd like to hear the Cowboy Junkies cover this.

I had no idea this cover existed until now, very nice. I'm not against having more Chrissie Hynde in my day. Thanks Bill!

She also did a great cover of " I wish you love"
That is great! Instant 9.

I love Van's music but the protest over live performance strikes me as a move of self interest. I don't think he gives a damn about the unknown artists he claims to be supporting. There is something ironic about a guy with such a mixed reputation as a live performer (either really into it or not) pushing for this.
For the covers of this song,  no other is as good as this.

Utterly splendid cover! Morrissey has become such an offensive and bigoted arse over the last few years that I’ve moved from idolizing him to disliking him. Partly as a result, I find I’m happier listening to this than the original. Chrissie Hynde also has a considerably better voice.

I dunno, I kinda like it, especially juxtaposed against that cover of Back on the Chain Gang that Moz put out recently.

Oh, now I want to hear them back to back!
I used to love her voice so much. My taste seems to have changed a lot as I don't like it anymore. I suck I guess... or getting old.
COVID Related Comment: Lately, every day feels like Monday.
Such a cool version!
Booooooorrrrrrriiinnnngg. That's what it's like hearing this voice.
Nice cover of the Morrissey song. It is worth looking out  Morrissey's cover of 'Back on the Chaingang'!  Great version!

Ah - do I smell a Morrissey hater?  Love the Smiths but Chrissy's sultry voice makes everything yummy.
Needs to follow with "What Difference Does it Make?" by Bobby Bare, Jr.

Lame.
Not good....bad cover
A great homage to an amazing song that captures the feel of an empty seaside town perfectly.

Killing a brilliant Song by Morrissey.........

Me too. Not so sure CH has added anything to Mozzer's original though?
Urgghhhh! Kill it, kill it with fire. This is an abomination of a classic tune.
