Six o' clock
In the morning I feel pretty good
So I dropped into the luxury of the Lords
Fighting dragons and crossing swords
With the people against the hordes who came to conquer

Seven o'clock
In the morning here it comes I taste the warning
And I'm so amazed I'm here today
Seeing things so clear this way
In the car and on my way to Stonehenge

I'm flying in Winchester cathedral
Sunlight pouring through the break of day
Stumbled through the door and into the chamber
There's a lady setting flowers on a table covered lace
And a cleaner in the distance finds a cobweb on a face
And a feeling deep inside of me
Tells me this can't be the place

I'm flying in Winchester cathedral
All religion has to have its day
Expressions on the face of the Savior
Made me say
I can't stay

Open up the gates of the church and let me out of here
Too many people have lied in the name of Christ
For anyone to heed the call
So many people have died in the name of Christ
That I can't believe it all

Now I'm standing on the grave of a soldier that died in 1799
And the day he died it was a birthday
And I noticed it was mine
And my head didn't know just who I was
And I went spinning back in time
And I am high upon the altar
High upon the altar, high

I'm flying in Winchester cathedral
It's hard enough to drink the wine
The air inside just hangs in delusion
But given time
I'll be fine

Open up the gates of the church and let me out of here
Too many people have lied in the name of Christ
For anyone to heed the call
Too many people have died in the name of Christ
That I can't believe it all

And now I'm standing on the grave of a soldier that died in 1799
And the day he died it was a birthday
And I noticed it was mine
And my head didn't know just who I was
And I went spinning back in time
And I am high upon the altar
High upon the altar, high

Too many people have died in the name of religions.
I saw Graham Nash last year, and he recounted this story regarding this song: He had taken some acid and got a ride out to Winchester Cathedral, where he indeed found someone who had died on his birthday, all the more surreal.
Divine inspiration I'd say .
At least two photos with this are Wells cathedral not Winchester.
Pretty good for being stoned out of his mind when he wrote it, and a damn sight better than "Winchester Cathedral" from the late 60s!

HA!  I'd go further.  Love your Faith but try to move beyond it.  All religion is merely a signpost pointing a way back to the source from which we all originate.  So don't fixate on the signpost, look instead at what lies ahead and beyond it.

Just some thoughts worth about that much.

I too love CSN.  And musically this is an absolute gem.  But I love my Catholic faith so it's a 1 for me.

A song by CSN I actually LIKE? No wonder it has a bunch of 1 ratings.

Actually, I'm surprised by the low rating by the RP users...

It damned sure wasn't ProTools back then folks.
Love CSN, but I think this is the result of a few too many left-handed cigarettes.
Do ya mean that RnR bands actually use to harmonize vocals?

Nah...can't be true. This must be some kind of algorithm.
Forgot about this album.  Love it.
Oh dear.
How long has it been since I've heard this song?!  Tripping in Winchester Cathedral - whoa.  {#Eek}

Ditto, it still fits with current politics

I love C S N and Y but this just plain blows. (Sorry I already used up my one negative comment for March already, ohhh it's gonna be a long month)

What? I'm the first to comment? But I don't really have an opinion about this CSN song. Really, I don't.*

*Because even though I had the first CSN album and the second CSNY album, this is from that next "CSN" album that seemed to come out when I wasn't paying attention, and that I never really heard except in bits and pieces. And this song never really did much for me. So I guess I just don't think it's among their best work.

So I guess I do have an opinion after all, but not much of one.

I feel exactly the same way. The first CSN album and Deja Vu are two are my favorite albums. I played them to death at the time. However, I'd never even heard of this one. Guess I'd moved on from these guys by time this came out. That said, my reaction to this song is - meh. Definitely not on par with their earlier recordings.

It's a wonderful thing to me that this follows a few songs after Elvis Costello's 'My Aim is True'.

I had the pleasure of meeting Graham Nash who was sitting near me at the Police concert at the Hollywood Bowl last year, during the intermission folllowing Elvis Costello's set as the opener ... and just minutes after Costello's duet with Sting on 'My Aim is True.'

Nash is the consummate gentleman.

It was that kind of evening. {#Yes}

...just curious:  was this played upon inspiration from a song comment for winter, which immediately preceded it in the playlist?..

This sounds like a tune from a really bad musical.
Nash wrote this, right? It has that airiness that seems to characterize his songs. God, I love their harmonies. I guess me and God love this song...{#Propeller}

WTF?
Huh, I've never heard this. It's not my new favorite, but it's nice to hear a track from CSN that hasn't been played to death.
Pompous, overblown crap, as usual from these guys.
Meh
Was wonderful to hear. Then and Now
...huh...
Wow, great to hear this again. I love this song. Nobody does harmony like these guys.
