From the California shore to New York City
The beat don't never stop
You can hear it on the radio anywhere you go
It's steady as the rhythm of a clock
It cuts through the noise of the city life
It won't seem to go away
It's the devil in disguise I tell you no lies
My fingers do the walking everyday
Yonder comes a young girl she wants to take a whirl
She thinks it's all a dream
She got rock and roll way down in her soul
She wants to know where's the limousine
Get up honey let your mama sit down
You're too young anyway
The devil in disguise give her the prize
Then you can carry her away
When the road I travel starts to unravel
Every which way it goes
The beat starts to press on my bullet proof vest
And my high turns out to be low
Give me my guitar I'm going to go far
Let me see it let me hold it in my hand
I'm the devil in disguise I tell you no lies
I'm playing in a rock 'n roll band
The beat don't never stop
You can hear it on the radio anywhere you go
It's steady as the rhythm of a clock
It cuts through the noise of the city life
It won't seem to go away
It's the devil in disguise I tell you no lies

Devil in Disguise isn't on Shades. Is this the version that's on Grasshopper?
Good Tune!
Not sure why so many JJ Cale songs on RP show "Shades" as the (incorrect) source album.
Some software default setting, I guess.
Anyway, this song is from "Grasshopper". : )

All the great and much covered songwriting aside, I don't believe J.J. ever played with a bad band. Always a tight sound on his songs, even the "laid back" sounding ones.
Yepppp....

I thought that this was the Grateful Dead and was pleasantly surprised. . . . but alas, it wasn't. A solid 7 though.

Album title: "The very best of"
I suppose everyone of us has his own "very best" compilation about J.J. Cale. A 3-CD set wouldn't be enough....

O U T S T A D I N G for me
I believe Mark Knopfler listened to a lot of JJ.
Fantabulous!

Love this song...You are missed!
Heard the beginnings of this song during an argument with my brother. I don't think that influenced my 9 rating - it was Cale. I love everything he does, and I didn't know he did this song until I came back from that argument (there were no survivors - I am a ghost.)

My Dad did that to me when I "discovered" Django R. but I've had the pleasure of doing this JJ discovery thang with my kids! Keep adding J.J. to the playlists, his body of work is consistently excellent. He's a breeze of fresh air.
That's why they call him the breeze...

Certainly I can't be the only one who hears that chorus and immediately think of Timbuk3's "The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades."
yep. I hear it
J.J. has been writing variations of the same song for 30+ years.
Luckily I like the song!
He's ripped off "The Quo"....LoL
Rock on, J.J.!
My, what a rollicking little tune! Too short though!
This guy is one of the unsung heroes of modern rock. His influence is pervasive, insidious and unrecognized. I bow to his magnificence. We are not worthy, we are not worthy!

Devil in disguise. Who's that? George Bush?
One of Tulsa's finest. Home sweet home!
There are those that walk among us that shun the light, that reject the adulation of the masses, they are the true masters. They are few...he is one.
is it humanly possible to not like jj cale?
'bout time - more JJ plz

Webb Wilder does a rockin version of this song, too!
JJ ROCKS!

Still remember when I was a kid, trying to figure out why he sounded so 'sleepy' on Crazy Mama...
