She grew up in an Indiana town
Had a good-lookin' mama who never was around
But she grew up tall, and she grew up right
With them Indiana boys on them Indiana nights

Well, she moved down here at the age of eighteen
She blew the boys away, was more than they'd seen
I was introduced, and we both started groovin'
She said, "I dig you, baby, but I got to keep movin' on, keep movin' on"

Last dance with Mary Jane
One more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin' in
And I'm tired of this town again

Well, I don't know, but I've been told
You never slow down, you never grow old
I'm tired of screwin' up, tired of going down
Tired of myself, tired of this town

Oh, my my, oh, hell yes
Honey, put on that party dress
Buy me a drink, sing me a song
Take me as I come 'cause I can't stay long

Last dance with Mary Jane
One more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin' in
And I'm tired of this town again

There's pigeons down on Market Square
She's standin' in her underwear
Lookin' down from a hotel room
Nightfall will be comin' soon

Oh, my my, oh, hell yes
You got to put on that party dress
It was too cold to cry when I woke up alone
I hit my last number and walked to the road

Last dance with Mary Jane
One more time to kill the pain
I feel summer creepin' in
And I'm tired of this town again

Wow, Flac really changes this song. Amazing!
Гэта топ-песня!
I think there's wayyy deeper personal meaning in these lyrics than many realize. Sure, interpret-able of course.
That aside ... simply awesome raw energy and incredible harmonics.  Nobody can say no to that presentation. (The video was absolutely  mistake).
Full Screen Fever: Tom Petty's Most GIFable Video Moments
What a song. And the video. One of my very fave music videos. Looks like Tom can act, too.
So a 10! And not just because I'm a Hoosier.
One of my least favourite Tom Petty songs.
And I like just about any of his hits (plus others that aren't such big hits).
This one is just ... meh.

Also, this reminds me of when I interned on Capitol Hill in DC. I was walking with one of the staffers to the House of Reps and he was telling me about organizing a letter-writing campaign demanding MTV pull the video for this song because it glorified necrophilia. My response was "But that song rocks!" Then I flashed a devil sign at him and punched him in the shorts. Well, maybe not the last part there.

You should have made his head explode and told him the truth that it is a farewell to marijuana.

Once again, WOW!
The trademark raw, over-amped, totally southern-inflected chords that open this thing are worth gold to start with, but then, it only gets better. This is a freaking NOVEL in a song! One magical morning in the paradise-on-Earth town of Pereira, this came on my iTunes. I had my little portable speakers cranked in the corners of the hotel room. I was with Edilsa, a Colombian actress, who gasped and grabbed me, rapt, saying, "Oh, yes! It is good! I love this!" It was our first of many mornings together, and I realized that I cherished her even more in that moment because she loved and understood the pure Universal power of this song. In my opinion, you can't lose, putting this song on! And oh my, my -- oh, hell, yes I'm glad I got to see Tom jam at Red Rocks (with Dire Straits!) in late Summer of '85 with sweet Tish from Wisconsin!

Miss ya, Tom!

This mix kicks ass.
Best Petty. Best version

Wow, first time hearing this track both A) since Tom's too-soon departure and B) as a FLAC file.

A) this song will always remind me of MTV; this song came out when I watched HOURS of their Music Videos (back when they did that) each day, and was the first Petty song I knew.

B)  Having only heard this on MTV and FM Radio, and maybe once or twice over the years on RP, now that I'm hearing it in FLAC, WOW....that intro has some cool guitar sounds I've never noticed before.  KUDOS to BillG for offering the FLAC files to us Android (and iphone) app users; it's very much appreciated!

PS - huh, I can't believe I never bought any Petty albums.  I might have to change that here soon.

As part of the generation that grew up with MP3s and desktop PC speakers, I, too, am amazed at how different a song like this sounds with a FLAC stream and Bose headphones. I don't claim to be an audiophile, but I can see why one would aspire.
The greatest hits album with this song was released in 1993
The guitar is strong in this one!
Great song. However, I think the release date listed under the album cover is incorrect. Greatest Hits was released in 1993, and that's when the song was recorded as well.
Only 7 to me ...
I can't get tired of listening this great, great song. Most perfect!
Happy Holidays to R&B and the entire RP community

For all you podcast listeners out there, check out the latest episode of Broken Record.  It's an interview with Rick Rubin about the recording of Wildflowers and this song.

Cheers
the last dance with Fentanyl was such a heartbreaker. The road is a killer.
My fave songwriter , this song is superb , the video was one of the best ever watch. Kim Basinger is very very cool !!!

I can't believe I never gave Tom Petty the respect he deserved. He was never on my playlist and for that I should be smacked upside the head. I'm sorry it took me until he died before I really listened. A great talent sadly gone.
Upgrade to 10 and set volume to 12!

A friend lent me Tom's autobiographical DVD Runnin Down A Dream, which got me into stuff of his which was not necessarily what made it onto the radio.  Some great stuff there.  And in the DVD Petty did a nice job of explaining where he thought he fit into rock history without sounding arrogant.

And Mojo was one of the best albums of 2010, IMHO.

folks why it was Tom not Neil that George went after for the Willburys? ( hint, he wanted talent)

Why George should ask Neil Diamond?

So Petty is a talent - aha!

True enough.  But to reinforce your sentiment the likes of Mozart and Beethoven will be remember for as long as music remains a facet of humanity (at its best).

This is not taking anything away from the likes of Tom P. or Neil Y. as I like 'em for the music they've created.    Only to say that while one is pop music self-referencing within the time and culture that created it, the other is.....Art that surpasses time and culture.  It's like the cave paintings in France....it expresses and touches something basic in every human being..

So it goes.

Ah yes - the video that gave a stylish turn to necrophilia (and took home 1994 Best Male Video honors from MTV in the process).

Yes, Kim played the role. But I don't think it was his wife or GF. Tom's role in the video was a morgue worker who stole her away for one "last dance" Which is very necrophilia indeed. However, I have every reason to believe that this is not anything to do with the original meaning of the lyrics. This is a song about giving up pot (Mary Jane) ....but having just one more hit for old times sake.

No, no. no, he hasn't much. TP is just my kind of music, but his melodies just fail to move me. By several yards. I guess that's what he wants to sound like.

Anyone that criticizes Tom Petty doesn't have a clue. He is truly one of our most classic influences in music history. When his band first came out, they didn't know where to "pigeon-hole" him...so they put him in New Wave. New Wave! That's how ahead of his time he was. And now, as we look back we see, he's just CLASSIC ROCK.
