I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat
If I were roy rogers
I'd sure enough be single
I couldn't bring myself to marrying old dale
It'd just be me and trigger
We'd go riding through them movies
Then we'd buy a boat and on the sea we'd sail
And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat
The mystery masked man was smart
He got himself a tonto
'cause tonto did the dirty work for free
But tonto he was smarter
And one day said kemo sabe
Kiss my ass I bought a boat
I'm going out to sea
And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat
And if I were like lightning
I wouldn't need no sneakers
I'd come and go wherever I would please
And I'd scare 'em by the shade tree
And I'd scare 'em by the light pole
But I would not scare my pony on my boat out on the sea
And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat
If I had a boat by Lyle Lovett is a masterpiece! It speaks to the dichotomy of life, and the Human experience. I can’t believe how many people don’t understand it, and I completely understand why most people don’t understand it’s meaning. What a fragile unpredictable adventure we undertake with every step! My understanding of the meaning of this song is absolutely correct, and possibly at the same time completely wrong. Thank you Lyle Lovett!
I once heard an interview with or about Irving Caesar, who wrote "Tea For Two" in 1924. Back then lyricists would typically spit out non-sense lyrics just to get the melody worked out and then refine the final lyrics from there. In the case of "Tea For Two", the "non-sense" lyrics worked.
When I first heard "If I Had A Boat", this story came to mind. To this day I'm not convinced it's not the case. I expect Lyle would tell you it means whatever you want it to mean.
9 + 1 = 10!
The Super Bowl happening right now, I am not watching. RP is better time spent.
Supper Bowl? Mmmmmm... ;-)
Artistic license! He didn't get anything extra for the dirty work!
Where in the world do people get the idea that *they* get to decide what's appropriate for RP?
7->8 just for the lyric
"And one day said kemo sabe
Kiss my ass I bought a boat "
It's been long in the coming 7 --> 9 for the same reason!!! Love this song!!!

It's good to see that you've applied what little brain power you have towards hating on this song. Stupid is as stupid does.
....... ditto

Lyle is a genius and this lyric is perfect whimsy.
...and a perfect whimsical look at life... if only...
If only it were that simple, Lyle. If only ...
HA! I daresay it's the dream (comment) of every wage slave shackled to his/her job all across this fair planet.

If I had 3 wishes.........
"If" leaves lots to be desired, but let's dream like children once again.
Makes sense if you imagine it from the point-of-view of a small boy. Also "If I were Roy Rogers, I'd sure enough be single, I couldn't bring myself to marry that ol' Dale...."
If only it were that simple, Lyle. If only ...
Let me change your mind: pick a song, any song...
OK I'll check back again in a few more years.
If only it were that simple, Lyle. If only ...
It is. And I'll give it a 9 if for lyrics only.
edit: Thought this was the studio version, from Pontiac, released in 1987.
This is what you get when I try thinking on a Sunday night...
Not sure about Peter's and Jesse's, but I could tell Lyle's voice immediately. Couldn't tell you why, except maybe I've been listening to (and enjoying) Lyle's music for ages.
Just an Old Spice commercial
Social promotion?
Love this song, so simple and escapist, it has echos of Cat Stevens for me.

And yet 700 plus ratings and an average of 7.7. Somebody seems to enjoy this quite a lot despite the "most stupid lyrics ever"
Not to mention the fact that the 9s outweigh the 8s nearly 2-to-1. Great song.

oh don't be a grouch. you missed the point.
one song that i keep hearing here, every time i don't want to hear it.
i am a huge fan of radio paradise.
me: I just turned on Radio Paradise for the first time in like two months, i was so looking forward to it.
friend: and you're crying from happiness?
me: < wailing >
friend: what?
me: Bill's playing that #$()Q($Q Pony Boat Song. First thing i heard. Now i gotta go away again.
friend: < shrug > Bittorrent?
Knowing Lovett's body of work I think this is perfectly in character for him. Lots of his songs have an element of the silly in them. That said I do like the idea of TMBG singing a cover of this.

LOVE that line.
no... they are just lame. its not that complex. come on now.
Perhaps you should look at a lot of the lyrics for the songs played here. Music is supposed to get an emotional reaction. If you want great writing, then read a book. I bet if we looked up the lyrics for songs that you gave a 8, 9 and 10 rating to, we would find some of those lyrics would be just as 'lame' as the words to this song. But I love the emotional pull of this song. Great song to relax to.
It's sung in character—that of a young boy I would assume. Apparently that one got past you.

I agree, I saw him this past summer and it was great, makes me want to visit Texas again.

Whoa !!! god love Lyle Lovett's ex-wife!!!
Now that works !
My favorite was when she played "Smelly Cat". Fond memories indeed!
That is an excellent sentiment!

I would go anywhere and do anything Lyle asked me... swoon!
