Oh, hello Mr. Soul, I dropped by to pick up a reason
For the thought that I caught that my head is the event of the season
Why in crowds just a trace of my face could seem so pleasin'
I'll cop out to the change, but a stranger is putting the tease on
I was down on a frown when the messenger brought me a letter
I was raised by the praise of a fan who said I upset her
Any girl in the world could have easily known me better
She said, "You're strange, but don't change", and I let her
In a while will the smile on my face turn to plaster?
Stick around while the clown who is sick does the trick of disaster
For the race of my head and my face is moving much faster
Is it strange I should change? I don't know, why don't you ask her?

Does this album pre-date Sgt. Pepper? Some of these songs are trippier than the Pepper album.

Check out the film Echo in the Canyon. A tribute to BS, CSNY, Mamas and Papas and the bands that grew out of LA in the early 60s.

YES!
I know I sound like a broken record, but I think this band may have been one the most influenced in the 60s.
You can hear there music in later albums of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, maybe even Jimi Hendrix.
They were country rock before the Byrds released Sweethearts of the Rodeo.

She said your strange but don't change, and so I left her.
They really listened closely to the Stones' satisfaction closely before this one - they have Keith to thank for the riff.

I believe that is either Richard Furay or Steven Stills on the vocals, not Neil Young.

Ah, the good old days. Sigh. Great!
Can't live with out Neil Young!!! Such a CLASSIC!!!! When I heard this as a kid I knew I wanted to be a hippie. (Is seven years old too young to be a hippie?)

I used to sing this to my daughter when she was a baby. I love Patty and the Chieftains, so it is a treat to discover this version. Thanks, RP!

How about playing "Bluebird"? The bajo at the end od the song is freaking cool. I tihnk it's Richie Furay.
That was surprisingly good..

Agreed. Broken Arrow is way ahead of its time, and Richie Furay's Sad Memory is beautiful!! WonderLizard wrote:

I remember hearing a rather good cover of this done by a female vocalist once, but I can't remember who it was.

Come on! I can't believe this isn't a 10+, but I guess there are some NY haters out there. Oh well, their loss. I remember the first time I heard this song. It still captivates me.

I have always thought this is such a strange song, but I dig!
I bet Neil and Steven Stills must have reels of great tape with them jamming to some of these tunes
like it when neil is more cheerful. so 60's I cant get no satisfaction.
"Retrospective" has always been one of my favorite albums.

Giving it a 9 because it was a pivotal song in my youth - and I've always liked it!

Very strong. Love it! Hannio wrote:
If a guitar signal is highly compressed in the studio the typical peek of the note is "squashed down" so that the typical peek and decay of the note is changed giving the sound a bit of a backwards sound. I think that this was probably the case in 1967/68. The usual array of stomp boxes were not around at the time. Just a guess.
The guitar in this always sounded to me like it was played backwards after recording. Anybody know if this is the case?

Neil's best work with the Buffalo Springfield. Great tune!
Love this song. Always haunted by these words:
"She said you're strange, but don't change, and I let her"
In his Neil Young biography Shakey, Jimmy McDonough speculates that the lyrics below could refer to Neil's bouts of epilepsy.
"Stick around while the clown
who is sick
does the trick of disaster
For the race of my head
and my face
is moving much faster"
Hannio wrote:

It sounds like the typical frenetic guitar stylings of Neil Young. I always thought his guitar work suited his subject matter very well.

Amazing that Neil can still bring it after all these years. Most of his peers are antique curios and nostalgia acts.

Can't say this classic 10 is overplayed on RP.

Well said Red. I suppose we are showing our age, but so what! Great music stands the test of time.
Buffalo Springfield still sounds good.
