House got too crowded clothes got too tight
And I don't know just where I'm going tonight
Out where the sky's been cleared by a good hard rain
There's somebody callin' my secret name
I'm going down to Lucky Town
Going down to Lucky Town
I wanna lose these blues I've found
Down in Lucky Town
Down in Lucky Town
Had a coat of fine leather and snakeskin boots
But that coat always had a thread hangin' to loose
Well I pulled it one night and to my surprise
It led me right past your house and on over the rise
I'm going down to Lucky Town
Down to Lucky Town
I'm gonna lose these blues I've found
Down in Lucky Town
Down in Lucky Town
I had some victory that was just failure in deceit
Now the joke's comin' up through the soles of my feet
I been a long time walking on fortune's cane
Tonight I'm sleepin' lightly and feelin' no pain
Well here's to your good looks baby now here's to my health
Here's to the loaded places that we take ourselves
When it comes to luck you make your own
Tonight I got to dirt on my hands but I'm building me a new home
Down in Lucky Town
Down in Lucky Town
I'm gonna lose these blues I've found
Down in Lucky Town

Nice!
this sounds quite a bit like Yothu Yindi.. not something I would normally have expected.

It's not a bad album. He put out another one, more targeted to a pop market, almost simultaneously. This one's better. "Souls of the Departed" is a little preachy but very powerful. At the closing, the guitar wails like a woman who's just lost her boy...as it's meant to do.
Bruce Springencamp. John Mellensteen.
Not one of the Boss's best creative periods. Still, this album did yield Better Days, one of his very best songs from any album.
Bruce haters, give it a rest.

The Rising is uninspiring?
I used to live Bruce....saw him numerous times starring in the infamous Central Park, NYC concert in 1974... not sure when he went from gravily songwriter to whiney pop star but I've found him uninspiring and unlistenable for a decade or more.
The Rising is uninspiring?
He does drone a bit doesn't he?

And I am the opposite. I thought his first couple of albums were just variations on a single tune. Even his breakout Born To Run just barely pushed my needle. But every thing since has been quite good, imo. Emwolb wrote:

Stop shouting/slurring.
Not one of his best periods, but still pretty good.

You could assemble Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, and Bob Seger into some kind of holy trinity for down-and-out working-class people. I'm just not sure which is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost.
Wow, that's being generous to two out of three of those people.

I'm beginning to think its just a gene that you're born with but it's triggered by other genes that decide when the listener becomes a real Bruce fan.
Here, he's Bruce Mellencamp.
This was one of his least well received albums.
But Better Days is one of his very best songs.
But to real Bruce fans, ALL of his songs are the best.

Sounds drunk to me.
Back after "Gasping Ray" and here's nasal Bruce. 'Cept I like this, because the man is real.
