Well, the first days are the hardest days, don't you worry anymore
'cause when life looks like easy street, there is danger at your door
Now think this through with me, let me know your mind
Oh, what I want to know is: are you kind?

Now, it's a buck dancers choice, my friends, better take my advice
You know all the rules by now and the fire from the ice
Now will you come with me? Won't you come with me?
Oh, what I want to know will you come with me?

Sister, well, I declare, have you seen the like
Their walls are built of cannon balls, their motto is: Don't Tread On Me
Come hear Uncle John's band, playing to the tide
Come with me or go alone
He's come to take his children home

It's the same story the crow told me; it's the only one he knows
Like the morning sun you come and like the wind you go
Ain't no time to hate, barely time to wait
Oh, what I want to know
Where does the time go

I live in a silver mine and I call it Beggers Tomb
I've got me a violin, and I beg you: call the tune
Anybody's choice, I can hear your voice
Oh, what I want to know
How does the song go?

Come hear Uncle John's band by the riverside
Got some things to talk about, here, beside the rising tide
Come hear Uncle John's band playing to the tide
Come on, come on or go alone
He's come to take his children home

Whoa, what I want to know
How does the song go?

Come hear Uncle John's band by the riverside
Got some things to talk about, here, beside the rising tide
Come hear Uncle John's band playing to the tide
Come on along or go alone
He's come to take his children home

Come hear Uncle John's band
(Brother)
By the riverside
(Ain't no time to hate)
Got some things to talk about
(Sister)
Here, beside the rising tide
(Ain't no time to wait)

Come hear Uncle John's band playing to the tide
Come on along or go alone
He's come to take his children home

couldn\'t agree more. take a good (great) song make a politcal statement out of it to suit your own purposes not the one originally intended. someone put a fork in \'em and see if the indiblow girls are done yet..... :(
"Sister well I declare"... Yeah, there you go. Make a political statement out of it. I was really trying to enjoy this....now I give up. Don't waste valuable airplay on this one. Please play the original! Nothing else compares....
I feel like I am SUPPOSED to like them, but they seem so obvious & sincere.
If Henry Kaiser was playing Lead Guitar it might be acceptable. Next time play the Henry Kaiser version. It\'s somewhat closer to the real thing!

I seriously doubt Jerry would have any problem with this. And it is not like the Dead never botched a cover!
This is one of the few Dead songs I like and it is completely unacceptable to hear anyone else do it. Ditto to Max Power!
Well, here's another country heard from. I am not one of those "holy writ" Dead freaks who trashes any cover he hears. As a matter of fact, I think I've had that very discussion on another comments page. In brief, my point to all you "oh don't harm a hair on its poor little corpse" freaks is this: consider how many tunes from other artists the Dead covered, then get a life. Aaaand I really enjoy the Indigo Girls. So, all that said, this version of UJB just leaves me flat. Oh, technically it's fine; some nice harmony work in there near the end. And maybe they kick ass with it live, I'll take your word for that. But my gut reaction to this track was "unh....and the point exactly is WHAT?"
I like that RP is broad enough to include a remake like this. Bill plays a lot of Dead tunes. I was never a Dead fan, so I appreciate this slant on the song. I also enjoy the range of tunes played by the Indigo Girls.
That sucked
An AWESOME cover - and the Girls opened for the Dead back in the early 90\'s. I think this is so cool. :)
Sigh. Another pointless remake.
This sounds like a cub scout campout where the den mothers get together and sing songs from their cooler days.
Can't hear this song without remembering and cracking up over this comment
Awful, just plain awful. No spirit, no feeling, nothing added to the original whatsoever. This is an absolute zero on the creativity scale. They\'ve managed to take an excellent song and make it nearly unlistenable.
Love this Indigo Girls cover!

Excellent point. The harmonies are better though. I LOVE the Dead, but their vocals really sucked much of the time, so I guess you could say the "in tune" vocals make it unique to the Indigo Girls. However, the truly unique dynamic of the Dead can never be recaptured by anyone.
