The heart is a bloom, shoots up through the story ground
There's no room, no space to rent in this town
You're out of luck and the reason that you had to care,
The traffic is stuck and you're not moving anywhere.
You thought you'd found a friend to take you out of this place
Someone you could lend a hand in return for grace

It's a beautiful day, the sky falls
And you feel like it's a beautiful day
Don't let it get away

You're on the road but you've got no destination
You're in the mud, in the maze of her imagination
You love this town even if it doesn't ring true
You've been all over and it's been all over you

It's a beautiful day
Don't let it get away
It's a beautiful day

Touch me, take me to that other place
Teach me, I know I'm not a hopeless case

See the world in green and blue
See China right in front of you
See the canyons broken by cloud
See the tuna fleets clearing the sea out
See the Bedouin fires at night
See the oil fields at first light
See the bird with a leaf in her mouth
After the flood all the colours came out
It was a beautiful day
Don't let it get away
A beautiful day

Touch me, take me to that other place
Reach me, I know I'm not a hopeless case

What you don't have you don't need it now
What you don't know you can feel it somehow
What you don't have you don't need it now
You don't need it now, you don't need it now
Beautiful day

I'm not a huge U2 fan but regardless of what all you stupid fucking haters say this is a GREAT song!
Used to love them once, now they are boring.
Great song for a car commercial...yawn.

Apparently it's not enough for people to vote a song 1 (which is fine). No, they also need to express their hate in posting a comment such as the one I quoted (which is just plain stupid). There is a button to skip a song. Use it and move on to something you want to hear and express how good that song is in a comment. That would be a much more clever use of energy and life time. It might also make you a slightly better person in the end.

Very well stated!!
Anyone else remember this as the title song on ITVs short lived coverage of the Premier League? It's a damn catchy number!

Um, yeah.  Lets all hate a talented band with a distinct sound because its lead singer tried to see how his fame and wealth could improve things in the world

I was fortunate to visit Ireland 2 years ago, and and got a great overview of the whole country, but N Ireland was special in so many ways, but I took my Ipod as we were on a bus, listening to U2 there took on a whole new meaning and to see
where the song Bloody Sunday originated was so powerful, Derry was a amazing city, on many levels.
Um, yeah.  Lets all hate a talented band with a distinct sound because its lead singer tried to see how his fame and wealth could improve things in the world

Many years ago, when I had my father visit as his 65th birthday present from me, I took him to see U2. I told him the day he arrived that we were going to the concert. The rest of the conversation went like this:

My dad (quite pleased with himself): “I just went to a rock concert last night!”

Me (surprised): “Who’d you see?”

My dad: “The Platters!”

Me (smiling): “This is going to be a little different.”

And it was. I love recalling the huge smile on his face when he did the wave at the concert and the wonder in his voice when he asked me, “Are you supposed to feel the music in your stomach?” and “Does everyone know every word to every song?” (“Yes, Dad.”)

Here's to everyone out there and "up there" who appreciates U2.
I don't care what anybody says, I LIKE THIS!!!

Probably the last tune by them that I really like. But we’ll always have the ‘80s (and some of the ‘90s).

Yes, there was - I saw them at the Bath Festival in 1969(?), along with Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Santana, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe & the Fish, Mothers of Invention, Steppenwolf, Johnny Winter, Byrds, Moody Blues, Canned Heat. Dr John was at first light on the Monday morning - it all overran due to weather and thousands had left by then.

Sadly my overwhelming memory of the entire festival was being freezing cold and soaking wet.

was at a show and one of their banter moments was saying that they were originally the 'Larry Mullin Band'. I can see why. Through many of their songs, the drums shine.
i bet the oil fields look cool as heck!

A well crafted Ciceronian style oration but everyone has the right to express their opinion and to point out the inspirational decline of a band.
I always read older people than me remember in the RP comments the first time they heard a song, maybe in the 60s. This is my time. I was 17/18 and tuned MTV (Latam) at a precise hour after dinner because they had announced during the day that U2 was playing a new song for the first time ever. It was an instant hit with me.
I'm just gonna give them a 7 cause we all know they are showered with 8's & 9"s and so spoiled and deserve it.
God dang is this what I needed right now. Thanks Bill & Rebecca!

Are you lonely?
Nice tune for a snowy NH day - and thankfully it is mid-February so the daylight is now apparent before I have to leave for work. Shoveling out in the dark is not so terrible - but driving into work and returning in darkness gets disheartening.

It is a beautiful day!
Uplifting and powerful.

Way overplayed/overused, but it’s a very good, uplifting song performed by some highly skilled musicians.

What a beautiful day it was for a christmas day alone with RP... Even if this was also a weird "springtime/apocalyptic" day... But when everything is getting down, music is hope. Thank you a lot RP ! Thank you Bill ! Long live !
This song came on and I immediately thought..."oh no." Then I realized that it's not the worst U2 song. It's actually pretty good. I'm just glad that it isn't the live version of "Bad". Ugh.

Not everyone follows the crowd.

Oh and their best song of the millennium is IMO, Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own.  Or is it City of Blinding Lights? Maybe, Miracle Drug?  No, Elevation?  Or, Stuck In A Moment You Can't Get Out Of?  Nay, Lights Of Home?  Perhaps, American Soul or Get Out Of Your Way?  The Miracle?  Cedarwood Road?

Toss up.

There's an image I'll always associate with this song. Don't laugh (oh, okay - go 'head and laugh), but it's from an episode of "Smallville." I don't remember the gory details, but at the end of the episode, Clark and Lana Lane were sitting at the top of the water tower, looking out over the green countryside. The sky was clear and achingly, beautifully blue, and this song was playing.

Hard NOT to like it, with that kind of image.  But then, I love U2 anyway.

We still miss you so much, Cynaera...  you were such a fine writer...  love this song...

Ann Lucas passed away February 6, 2012, at University of Utah Medical Center, at age 55 due to a subdural hematoma, which required surgery. She was put on life support, but after three days without signs of improvement, her family made the difficult decision to discontinue life support and donate her organs on the 6th.

Ann was born on Oct. 12, 1956, in Twin Falls, Idaho, to Buss and Dorothy Stepp, who encouraged her to follow her dreams. One dream was to become a published author, which she achieved in 2010 with her novel "Life-Dance". She also wrote fan fiction for the television show "La Femme Nikita".

Ann was also a freelance correspondent for the "Elko Independent" newspaper and had a recurring column called "Shaking the Tree", as well as writing articles for "Elko Daily Free Press".

If you drink a couple of beers and close your eyes and imagine the Glee cover of this, you'll understand why someone should have unplugged Bono's microphone about fifteen years ago.

A breath of fresh air when I first heard it on FM radio. Which underscores the sorry state of FM radio.
In the context of everything on RP it still holds up pretty well. But when a hit single becomes overplayed there's not much that can rescue it.

Not a U2 hater or a fan boy, although I got a good laugh out of the iTunes fiasco.

Always interesting to read two sides going to war over a song or a band. I'm not sure it's Bill's intent to highlight the lack of real music appreciation that exists (they used to teach it in college, do they still?), and the extent of age- and era-ism that cloud people's perceptions of popular music. But since we come from roughly the same backgrounds (1970s "progressive" FM radio) I suspect that it is.

Perhaps you should lay out the circumstances under which it is "necessary" to respond. Then, I would no longer have to wonder. The uncertainty was wearing on me.

In line with that written below, I don't care for much of U2's body of work.  However, they have produced two handfuls of iconic songs in their 45 years of rock, and this is one of them.

It's a Beautiful Day, y'all!

You can be a RP listener and member of the community and dislike St Bonio and the Tax Dodgers. Strange but true. Plus minorities can put their oar in, despite being in a minority.

And unless RP has suddenly been taken over by you without any of us noticing, you shouldn't be telling folk to "move on elsewhere". I doubt that Bill & Becky appreciate a listener trying to drive other listeners, many of whom may be paying punters, away. Now if this were a U2-only station then you might have a point...

Worship St Bonio if you want - that's fine - but allow that others will be less enthusiastic about them or even (gasp) critical. One listener's Godlike is another's Sucko-barfo, and that's a damn good thing.

Sorry Will - didn't realise I had turned up in the U2 Appreciation Society website. Will, they are and have always been overrated. It is not a matter of "hating" the band - it is a matter of having these fops rammed down our throats ad infinitum, with scant regard to others.
