Hey, everybody, let's have some fun
You only live but once
And when you're dead you're done, so
Let the good times roll, let the good times roll
I don't care if you're young or old
Get together, let the good times roll
Don't sit there mumblin', talkin' trash
If you wanna have a ball
You gotta go out and spend some cash, and
Let the good times roll, let the good times roll
I don't care if you're young or old
Get together, let the good times roll
Hey Mr. Landlord, lock up all the doors
When the police comes around
Just tell 'em that the joint is closed
Let the good times roll, let the good times roll
I don't care if you're young or old
Get together, let the good times roll
Hey tell everybody
Mr. King's in town
I got a dollar and a quarter
Just rarin' to clown
But don't let nobody play me cheap
I got fifty cents more that I'm gonna keep, so
Let the good times roll, let the good times roll
I don't care if you're young or old
Get together, let the good times roll
No matter whether rainy weather
Birds of a feather gotta stick together
So get yourself under control
Go out and get together and let the good times roll
You only live but once
And when you're dead you're done, so
Let the good times roll, let the good times roll
I don't care if you're young or old

I love blues music, from Blind Lemon Jefferson and Charley Patton on through Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf. But for some reason I have never liked BB King at all. Maybe because at some point blues patterns turned into a kind of boring, predictable cliche, and BBK is the personification of that cliche.

Gentleman oh yes he is. First time I caught BB live was in a 1650-seater venue in Croydon, nr London back in '85. After a fantastic show BB was down the front, shaking hands for ages - and what monster sized hands he has - and so grateful we'd packed the place out, and so pleased we'd enjoyed ourselves so much. Such a humble guy forever surprised by his world wide appeal. He got me into the blues big time. Apparently his gambling debts are a big factor in keeping him on the road at his age.

Back in the early 70s BB was still playing clubs and small towns in the Southeast. I saw him in a high school gym in North Carolina, where there was a power failure on the stage about halfway through the show. Instead of retreating to his dressing room, BB came out into the audience and sat at a table, shaking hands and chatting with everyone who came up.
When power was restored, he said "Oh, I'm sorry they fixed it, I was having such a good time talking with you folks."
A real gentleman, one of the last of his kind.

Saw him play in October of 2008, at the Rialto in Joliet. One of the best shows I have ever been to.

Yes indeed. Used to run a fuel plaza on the Ohio Turnpike in th early 90's. His tour bus pulled in for fuel and food (we had a Popeyes Chicken there). Everyone rides on the same bus, including BB. Very nice guy, a truly happy presence. Got to talk to him a little as he walked around and stretched his legs. We got quite a few bands passing thru, other than Willie Nelson's 3 bus enterage, BB's was a memorable visit.

Good version of this song. Not as good as Ray's but still good.
I could listen to BB King all day long.
"BB King, Clapton, Buddy Guy, and Jim Vaughn. I believe the world turned a little bit slower that day, due to the high concentration of pure ´EpicWin´ on that stage!"
Putting nostalgia aside...this is quite boring.
Ray Charles' cover of this, on Quincy Jones' compilation titled "Q's Juke Joint", really, REALLY rocks! (Actually, come to think of it, the whole CD rocks.) That'd be a good one to add to the rotation, Bill!

I used to be like that...
I got a call to play piano for a band that was covering 16 blues tunes. I thought - no sweat - 1-4-5 in 5 keys... What I discovered in preparing the material was that each song was different in ways that were sometimes obvious and sometimes subtle. Charting that stuff so that I'd be able to recreate those 16 1-4-5 songs as unique pieces was a real eye-opener for me. I hear the blues alot differently now. FWIW.

It's the same when you're playing it. If you've been playing more than a couple years and you're still thinking while you're playing you're just not going to get it. It's in you or it's not.

Caffeine's comment was about 1-4-5... Too bad it isn't 1-4-5... if you listen, its 1-6-2-5 on the turn-arounds. If you're gonna wail on the blues, you got to get it right, cat.
Frankly Mr. King is different from Mr. Christian, and he's gone so far to say in his biography he's not the most technically adept guitarist. But he is a showman, and that's what BB's about.
Yes that's so right, Caffeine is sorely missing something more than just a beat or 2 if only hearing 1-4-5..BB is a real showman with warmth and a sweet voice..

Check out Indianola Mississippi Seeds if you want to hear more. That one came out in either the late 70s or early 80s. A very good one to start your B.B. King collection.
King has a LOT of music before hooking up with U2...

Well said caffeine !!
It's not until you play it that you understand it. No way is, for example, Smokestack lightnin' like Let The Good Times Roll, or like Can't Be Satisfied by Muddy.W. or like.....I dunno...you name it, it'll be different

If you can play 1-4-5 like this, then you should be out playing somewhere and not posting on RP about how boring blues is.
1-4-5-1-4-5-1-4-5-1-4-5-1-4-5-1-4-5-1-4-5-1-4-5-1-4
Gonna go down to the delta and play me some blues.
5-1-4-5-1-4-5-1-4-5-1-4-5-1-4-5-1-4-5-1-4-5-1-4-5-1
Gonna go down to the delta and play me some blues.
4-5-1-4-5-1-4-5-1-4-5-1-4-5-1-4-5-1-4-5-1-4-5-1-4-5-1
Gonna buy me a pair of blue suede shoes.
ad infinitum.
Not into B.B. King at all. At least when Charlie Christian did blues, he threw in a blazing hot, technically proficient solo with interesting rhythms and phrasings. I need my minor 7ths and half diminishes. Otherwise I feel like I'm listening to a musical endless loop.

there is a live version that will blow your mind...its no more complex, but it has so much more energy, that it is intoxicating and it just does not matter - the only reason this song got a high rating (I know what BB King is capable with this song)

B. B. King is great and the tune by Michael Penn just before was also fine, but this was the first time I thought: Hey Bill, these two tunes don't go well toghether. You should work on that sequence.
Bill's refining his contrasts.
Louis Jordan is beyond compare, and I love B.B. too, so I'll refrain from commenting on the result of this venture, except to express disappointment.
I am going to compare the great B.B. King to my cat, Basil. Both are big guys. Both are diabetic and need regular care. Both have big hearts and are entirely loveable. That said, Basil can't play guitar for shit. So I'll have to hand it to Blues Boy King and Lucille, after all. Happy birthday!
Then again, my cat Basil never collaborated with U2, so he's got that going for him.
H-B!
B.B.!!!

B.B.'s the reason my Grande Ballroom (Detroit) handbill appeared in his exhibit at the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame. Thanks B.B.! Thanks Russ (Gibb)!
Great, apart froom the stop chorus. I think there should have been more to the chords:
bahda dap *singing* bahda dap *singing*
apart form that, its great.
Lucille is sounding oh so sweet!! B.B. is the B.Best!

There is something to be said for longevity...it grants icon status, irregardless of relative merit. If only Robert Johnson had lived to a ripe old B.B. age.
