I think I'm goin' back
To the things I learned so well in my youth
I think I'm returning to
Those days when I was young enough to know the truth
Now there are no games
To only pass the time
No more electric trains
No more trees to climb
But thinking young and growing older is no sin
And I can play the game of life to win

I can recall a time
When I wasn't ashamed to reach out to a friend
Now I think I've got
A lot more than just my toys to lend
Now there's more to do
Than watch my sailboat glide
But every day can be
A magic carpet ride
A little bit of courage is all we lack
So catch me if you can, I'm goin' back

La la la la la, etc.
Now there's more to do
Than watch my sailboat glide
But every day can be
A magic carpet ride
A little bit of courage is all we lack
So catch me if you can, I'm goin' back

La la la la, etc.

Why didn’t you just edit your comment?

Nice!

Echoes in the Canyon, documentary on Netflix, has a segment about the friction in the band over including this song. Worth watching in case you haven’t seen it

Definitely!

A nice (recent) cover was by Jakob Dylan for the "Echo in the Canyon" soundtrack. In fact if you like the Rickenbacker sound, that whole LP is outstanding.

Great documentary. I need to watch it again.

warm feelings and memories here.

Was this actually The Wrecking Crew backing them up?

Nope.
The first album... yes.
The record company didn't trust them yet.
Well, they trusted Jim/ Roger to play the Richenbacker.

Magic. Pure magic!!
The Byrds > Angry Birds

Probably my favorite band from the 60's!

A highly under rated Byrds LP. Draft Morning is very haunting to me and others that were drafted in 1968. Thank you Roger McGuinn for some timeless music.
Classic Byrds guitar tones in the background ...
One of the most original and creative bands ever.
So catch me if you can, I'm goin' back ... in my time machine.
God, they WERE spectacular!
I just checked to listen to all of the different versions mentioned below of this Carole King/Jerry Goffin song, "Going Back" I just enjoyed hearing by one of the great 1960s bands, The Byrds. In addition to The Byrds, YouTube has all of the other versions mentioned: Nils Lofgren, Dusty Springfield, Carole King, Phil Collins, and Freddie Mercury! Alas, there is no version by The Monkees: perhaps Bill confused it with The Monkees' "Goin' Down", which is on YouTube.

someone upload Nils Lofgren's version

That is my favorite version.
Aaaahhhhhhhhhhh!  So sweet, like a good mojito in July.
As this is the only version I remember way back when (and on my Byrds album, an early release, the monaural version) it is my favorite.  An 8 going for 9.
A great song, but one that epitomizes the reason why the original group broke up. Having three strong songwriters in the band, this song by Goffin/King was several steps back. The overall album is excellent.

This hits me with such a trippy flashback vibe! Jefferson Airplane, Buffalo Springfield, The Hollies, Mamas & the Papas come to mind...

Never heard this version, but I prefer the original one ... I mean Dusty Springfield's version

{#Yes}  One of the best tracks she recorded.  Only two Dusty tracks in the library too.  Shame on you Bill {#Ask} {#Laughing}

There were apparently still a few of them contributing on this album, but not as much as on the earlier albums.

I had no idea that Carole wrote this. Apparently Phil Collins and Freddie Mercury did covers as well. BillG said he thinks it was originally covered by The Monkees—do tell!

Definitely The Byrds greatgreat sound. Not sure if I've ever really heard this one before (you know, stopped and listened...)
Love it!

Twanging buzzy guitars, swooning rhythms, multi-layered spectral harmonies — yup, The Byrds sure laid down some amazing tunes!

And at the same time were far more influential than many recognize.

I gotta find that one
One of those forgotten tunes that brings you back to your childhood years instantly. I'm a melancholy man, that's what I am.

Spectacular!!  Only 2 comments so far?

Did this just recently get added?
Good album.

Right song, right time, right time of life to remember who we were or who we were going to be...

Just watching the fire die down and feeling winter creep into my room.
Lovely stuff from my childhood. Thanks RP
