You're twistin' my melon man,
You know you talk so hip man,
You're twistin' my melon man (call the cops).

Hey rainmaker, come away from that man,
You know he's gonna take away your promised land,
Hey good lady, he just wants what you got you know,
He'll never stop until he's taken the lot.

He-he-hey, he-he-hey-hey.

Gonna stamp out your fire, he can change your desire,
Don't you know he can make you forget you're a man?
Gonna stamp out your fire, he can change your desire,
Don't you know he can make you forget you're a man, you're a man?
You're twistin' my melon man, you speak so hip.

Hey rainmaker, he got golden plans, I tell you,
You'll make a stranger in your own land,
Hey good lady, he got God on his side,
He got a double tongue you never think he would lie.

(oh he lied, ooh he's twistin' my melon man,
oh he lied, ooh he's twistin' my melon man)

Gonna stamp out your fire, he can change your desire,
Don't you know he can make you forget you're a man?
Gonna stamp out your fire, he can change your desire,
Don't you know he can make you forget you're the man (you're the man)?

He's gonna step on you again,
He's gonna step on you,
He's gonna step on you again,
He's gonna step on youuuuuuu.

Hey rainmaker, come away from that man,
You know he's gonna take away your promised land,
Hey good lady, he got God on his side,
He got a double tongue you never think he would lie.

Gonna stamp out your fire, he can change your desire,

Not from spelling college
Daft question perhaps but: have the Mondays ever acknowledged the similarity with John Kongas Tokoloshe man?

I was referring to the piano riff, which does not appear in the Kongos song

I have to be honest, I didn't like it at the time and I don't like it now. But I am fully aware that it's not them, it's me.
Great song. The worst whistling ever.
Piano riff lifted from Freedom by George Michael
Should be followed by "the Lemon Song" by Led Zepelin!

I'd say the fact you've asked the question confirms twisting of the melon

Freedom Here -- the bassline & groove is similar.... (I like GM's Freedom better).
Saw these guys at The Moore theatre in the early 90's. Hadn't even heard of them. Blew me away.....
Well im back in the good old days
GREAT TUNE!  Excellent music, & the lyrics are TOO FUNNY!  That is why we come here.  Thanx RP!

These guys took all the Molly so the rest of us don't have to.

Brilliant album really. I wonder if dance rock is going to make a comeback soon, considering the prevalence of the 30 year cycle of pop culture.

Not too bad, prefer the original.

He's the guy who demands no repeated segues! For free!

Piano riff rips off the one in Freedom 90 by George Michael.

It was entertainment, not theology. I enjoyed the ensuing drama more than the music.
Give me Stone Roses or The Charlatans ("UK") any day.
I wonder if Bill has ever played this after a cut by The Sundays, or before one by 'Til Tuesday ?

Great rhythm track. Perhaps influenced by Julian Cope's Beautiful Love?

Way back when I was young, an ol' timer said this about a constant griper, "If someone hit that guy over the head with an axe, he'd probably complain that they struck him with the blunt side."  Since I am now an ol' timer I get to use that line.

Does the fact that they had a "dancer" as a band member count for a +1?  Wish that I had a pal that decided I could collect royalties for going on tour and partying my ass off...

There's actually a melon emoji.. go figure.
Crazy lyrics, but, good tune!
Good tune!
If you haven't already, you must see the film 24 Hour Party People. So great.
Too bad drugs sunk this band, they could have had a better (and longer) career - ahhh Rock & Roll.
Great Tune! I never heard of them before. ...Thanx RP!
Best be careful or we'll send Bez to maraca you!

Great throwback. Freshman at University. Oh the nineties, how I miss you. Both movies and music

Leonard Cohen?
The whistling is more about feeling the passion than judging the quality.

Just not that excited about this song.  It's not bad or anything, it's just not that great.
Well you learn something every day. My Aussie wife pointed out this was a cover of a very different song:

Cool Man - I lived in Manchester Early - Late 90 s. The Cool Mondays and mostly Stoned  Roses were the staple diet with or without diet supplements.

I love the enthusiasm with which he whistles badly at the end. It adds such a note of unselfconscious whimsy to the song.

It'd be cool for a DJ to fade in and out from the Kongos version to the Mondays and back again.

I remember this song co-written by and performed by John Kongos in 1971 under the title "He's Gonna Step on You Again".

It was very popular with DJ's in discos as a "floor filler" to motivate the reluctant teenagers who could not dance when sober - like me {#Wink}

This cover version is at least as good as the original version and I suppose it had the same effect almost 30 year later.

Disc 2 was the best the remixes, love the mondays cant listen to any tracks without bringing back golden memories, Bill did you like Black Grape? they did some great work.
WHOOOP WHOOOP I'm a student again!! {#Bananasplit}
Love this! Always thought it was Robyn Hitchcock till I checked just now. In any case, it's a great triippy get-off-work slam-a-beer song! So cool to see the Japanese CD cover! It says in katakana, "Hap-py Man-days" and makes me feel natsukashii for my 20 years in日本.
In general, pretty much OK.  The whistling? Meh.
It's about time! I've been waiting to hear this for-ever!

There are a few things I would like to STEP ON today!!!!  Is there something in the water out there that is causing chaos?  Groovy Track, however.{#Roflol}
Wow, that's a pretty amazing piece of synchronicity. This album came out in 1990, and in 1991 Primal Scream came out with their "Screamadelica" album, which is almost a carbon-copy of this sound. I never knew about the Happy Mondays. I wonder what the rest of the album is like? I sure played the hell out of that Primal Scream disc...

(Just a quick post-script - the cover art for the "Screamadelica" album was done by the label's in-house artist, Paul Cannell, who was allegedly inspired by a damp water spot he'd seen on the Creation Records offices ceiling after taking LSD - I'm sure it helped many people enjoy the record)

Umm, name that hybrid.
Stone Roses and T Rex.

8-9 for the memories....!

Melon Man Bearing Gifts.
Definite Jesus Jones vibe.
Same time period.
I am discovering this; I found it irritating...
Then I listened to several versions (Happy Mondays, Def Leppard, Party Boys).

John Kongo's original is exactly that: an unheard of concept, a UFO of a song - in the best sense of the words. Almost experimental.
I'd give the Party Boys kudos for the nice energy of their cover... the others aren't bringing anything new to the table, in my opinion.
First time hearing. My first thought: Stone Roses.

Is this an INXS song?
Poor imitation of the original.
What a mess.

Hey, cool, the cover art of the band name there is in Katakana...
Talkin' so hip, mon, ya breakin' my mind!
