Night-time is so lonely
When you hear a sound
But it's only an empty heart
Beating on through the night
A sad sad drum
And I'm lying here listening
And the raindrops are all glistening
In my dreams
And it seems
That the sun never comes
And I want my sad reflection
To go drifting through the skies
To be in your eyes
And I'm waking to this aching
And it's breaking me in two
All the space
All the waste
All the distance between me and you

And the people with their voices
Random choices will they ever learn
To really see
Really be on fire when their spirit burns
I want the person inside me
To be someone I'd recognize
If he was in your eyes
So I'm waiting, contemplating
Relocating a faded image in my thoughts
But the memories are like clouds
Try so hard
But they never can be caught
But I'm trying, yes I'm trying
But I'm only lying in the dark
So alone
On my own
No one home
And if love was worth a fortune
Then I'd need a rise
To be in your eyes
I want these words to be the things
I hoped you'd realized
To be in your eyes

Both Pavement and Parquet Courts should tip a hat to this one. Great tune!
Kinda boring.
On of the toppest albums of 80's.

(I think the indicated album release date here is wrong)
Wow! What a surprise. A lesser broadcasted song. Different sounding than the Vinyl version. I love it!
Love these guys, just wish they’d love each other. Steve mate, let bygone be ...

Haha, I glanced at the album cover, and I saw a knight eating a piece of pizza. I'm kinda disappointed at the reality.

Song's OK. What are they the church of?

They are an Australian band (were). Steve is performing around the tracks (ah well, till around last march). Saw him performing in the Southern Highlands (1.5 hrs from Sydney) and he has not lost it one bit. Great musician.

All time favorite album. Every track a great song. They have an admirable discography. Thanks for playing them.
Great album.  RP - need to correct the release date; this album came out in 1982.

Although it says 1996 here the album is actually from 1982, so even more surprising :)
Great band still making relevant music, most under-rated band around IMHO, more Church!

Gorgeous song, great (Aussie) band. Thanks for playing 'our' music from Down Under here. And always nice ofcourse, hearing my old neighbour Steve, from Bondi.
Well I'm on my third beer, but this sounds like some pretty darned good songwriting to me.
The production on this track is excellent and the new FLAC feed really lets its shine. Sounds really good.

My music feed "skips" every so often. Anyone else?

Yes.  Me too.
They were awesome when I last saw them in the Vines in Hunter Valley, NSW in 2007 or 08 opening for Paul Kelly and Chrissy Hindes.

Bill can you play WIDE OPEN ROAD BY THE TRIFFIDS.  The Church covered it on the day, and it is the essential Australian homesick song.  Thanks for making days at work with your music splining so pleasant.

BUTCH
Matt of The National must have been a fan -the delivery is similar.

aaaah...did't hear that for a long time, one of the greatest bands I liked in my teenage years and it still sounds fresh, like the organ and mandolin sounds, great soundtrack for the autumn months

Can't stop bobbing my head. I like it!!!
would have preferred one of their other songs.

My favorite band on my birthday.  Thank you Bill!

The Church are on a roll; sold-out Aussie tour and inducted in to the Australian Rock and Roll Hall of Fame recently; check out their latest Untitled 23; this band is still producing vital music after all these years, any other band out their can that after three decades?
Always loved these guys...

Whatever happened to them? Remember Steve Kilbey and another band member moved to Sweden from Australia in the 90s. I did the same a few years earlier, but eventually came home after many years. Wonder if they're still there.

They toured this summer. Was interested in going but couldn't get my act together in time to drive 300 miles to see them. Plus it was a weeknight.

Oh well. More money for Porcupine Tree shows!

...they're still around and still very active - tim powles joined the band in the late nineties as drummer/producer and their output since then has been prodigous...

love me some church.  i never had this record, so it's nice to hear something "new"  {#Cowboy}
More Church please
Amen! {#Notworthy}
This is from 1982 and it sounds as though it could have been recorded yesterday.
What a masterful lyricist! If you don't "get" this band, listen more carefully to the lyrics. It's like Bob Dylan on Beaudelaire.

I'll second drover's comments...VERY happy to hear a deeper Church cut on RP. Excellent tune.
I third that.
I really like those old Church CDs. The one with "Unguarded Moment" is good, too.
Again, this is an awesome album. Works well for dinner parties, summer picnics, and long drives through Yellowstone National Park. Yup.
I do dig this ;-)
...so refreshing to hear...

Outstanding. Never heard it, but it's great. There were a lot of groups in the 80's I missed.

I love this song. There are so many overlapping layers that mesh so well.

My favourite track from one of my favourite albums...! What a great RP morning (Central European Time)!

That guitar sounds like The Motels. It's the same phase settings or something I don't know much about.
One of my least favorite tracks off one of my favorite albums... Listen to whole album, then judge.

this delivers sudden and profound soothing to my already heinous work day. if i wasn't already here...i'd call in sick. is RP hiring?
Saw these elderly chaps play last night. They are still great ...maybe better actually. Didn't play this golden oldie though.
Quietly understated, tender and always welcome.
Especially for the time when this band was putting this and their other albums out I always thought they were so very very BOOOOOOORRRRRRIIIIINNNNGGGGG!!!!!
Haven't heard this one before. Lovely. Thanks!
Thank you for playing early Church. These early albums are especially wonderful.
Possibly the best Church album.

B&R pondered this one long and hard before adding it to the playlist. It sat in LRC for months. Glad they added it -- I feared they were going to say "we've already got 3 boatloads of Church in our playlist" and boot it. I like the Church and B&R obviously do too, but it always baffled me that the playlist overlooked so many wonderful pre-Starfish tracks while leaning heavily in favor of Starfish-and-beyond tracks, some of which verge on corny. (With this song added, there are still only 2 Church tracks out of 13 on the playlist that pre-date Starfish.) Glad to see another great and heretofore overlooked pre-Starfish track on the list now.
me too! feels like so long ago, no?
Yeah! More early Church. Maybe some off Seance next. Brings me right back to high school.
