I start up in the north, I grow up from special seed
I sprinkle it with sensibility
From French and Hungarian snow
I linger in the sprouting until my engine's full

Then I move across the sea to European bliss
To language of poets
As I cut the cord of home
I kiss my mother's mother, look to the horizon

Wide-eyed, new ground
Humbled by my new surroundings

I am a citizen of the planet
My president is Kwan Yin
My frontier is on an airplane
My prisons: homes for rehabilitating

Then I fly back to my nest, I fly back with my nuclear
But everything is different
So I wait, my yearn for home is broadened
Patriotism expanded, by callings from beyond

So I pack my things
Nothing precious
All things sacred

I am a citizen of the planet
My laws are all of attraction
My punishments are consequences
Separating from source the original sin

I am a citizen of the planet
Democracy's kids are sovereign
Where the teachers are the sages
And pedestals fill with every parent

And so, the next few years are blurry
The next decade's a flurry of smells and tastes unknown
Threads sewn straight through this fabric
Through fields of every color, one culture to another

And I come alive
And I get giddy
And I am taken and globally naturalized

I am a citizen of the planet
From simple roots through high version
I am guarded by the angels
My body guides the direction I go in

I am a citizen of the planet
My favorite pastime: edge-stretching
Besotten with human condition
These ideals are born from my deepest within

This rocks!!!!!
This CD hasn't left my car player since I bought it!  The bonus version extra CD has some of her best work ever.

How could I forget about the cacophony??

"Is this Alanis Morissette?" my wife asks from the other room.

"Yeah," I say, "It sucks, doesn't it?"

"I love it!"

Hmmm.  Not my favorite Alanis.  Nossir.

wow. this is probably the worst song i have ever heard on RP! worse than that manu crap!!!!!
where is that 0 rating when you need it?

I have always admired the work of her band, especially her guitarist.
Like a Eurovision song. Silly...
Please, for the love of all things dear, don't play this song again.

Hey everybody this is a really good album. I've been listerning to it a lot since it came out. I really like it.
A 7 from me, with potential to rise. I'm not as fond of Wonderkind from the same album though.

So here's my question, do you know how right you are? For example, did you know that she put out an album well before "Jagged Little Pill" that was really, terribly poppy and exploitative and just generally bad? And that before that she was a "star" on a tween comedy show in Canada? I don't know if her management took advantage of her the way you're thinking (she was probably managed by her parents in the earlier parts of her career) but there's no question her talent's been exploited.

3 for the song, and a bonus point for being Canadian, gorgeous, and wacky. Nothing could ever top Jagged Little Pill. The live version of this track would almost certainly be better; this version seems over-produced. I want to see her shaggy lead guitarist ripping into his music like an over-caffeinated pitbull (click here)... not some Paula Abdul or Michael Jackson number.
I like it. I think you are right about the potential of this song live and in person. The dynamics would be huge!!
I'm with you Bill. I kinda like it. 7 > 8
sheesh, rough crowd here!! When Loreena McKennitt re-invents her sound (for every album) she's praised, but when Alanis does it, she gets no love at all!! Certainly a change for Alanis...but c'mon - still WAY more mature than her early stuff!! Anyone remember her first pop album? This rises WAY above!!
Can't get past her whiny vocal tone. I don't care how much of a departure it is for her. Her voice is less enjoyable than a razor blade on frosted glass.

C'mon, very cool song. If Madonna did it it'd be big!
I like it.

Bill took care of that when he played this song.
Yeah, its a little on the produced side... but this is the first track off this album that sounds like the instrumental part and the singing are for the same song (IMHO).
To the last seven posters, check what your headphones are plugged into , cause you can't be listening to the same song I am. Zweiblumen and down
Nope, just too screechy. And Alanis, why the long face?
I give this 2 puking pack men.
I have this strange urge to dance the robot in the chorus... M U S T R E S I S T T H E U R G E
Yikes...seems that Alanis and this song really strikes a nerve. I really like the building tension of her songs. The Canadian part is ok too.
What the CRAP

I like Alanis, but this really sucks.
No, please, no!! We had quite enough of her in the 90's.
Sorry God, but this is no good. I guess you are not all powerful. The worst part is her voice. And the song. And the music.
Sucko? Check. Barfo? Check.

I like it as well - it's a different sound for her, and I'm not typically a big fan of her music, but I always have an open mind to new music. I don't why there's SO many negative comments though. It seems as though people automatically jump on the "I hate it because it's Alanis" bandwagon. Geez, give it a chance before dissing it!
I don't even know what she is saying, it just sounds like she's shouting at me and I have to turn the volume down on this one.
I like the groove during the chorus. The rest is a bit forgettable. 7
bla bla bla.. I dig it.
I like her, but I'm more of a Fiona man.

So very, very bad. Somebody team this woman up with a decent writer/producer! She's been on a slow, steady decline since her CD with Glen Ballard. This track is so contrived, already dated production-wise and god awful!
sharkartist wrote:

Well now, this is somewhat new material. But yes AM is still very bitter and pissed off. Manipulated by a horny bunch of Manager/Handlers to be sure; her youth and naivety preyed upon until the day she was dumped. She is all better now but still wants to let you know just how angry she really is ... So, Lani, tell really now, how angry are you?
I think what really kills it is the production. It's so perfectly polished that each part loses it character. It ends up goulash. I also think she's borrowed a little too much from her time in India. Works for Loreena McKennitt, not for her.
Really? This is Alanis? Seems very different to me. The comparisons to Bond music seem very apt. This is a side of her I didn't know about but I actually like it.
Oh Alanis... why are you so screechy and angry here? Your Sinead impression just doesn't work....
Whew! The playlist was about 30 seconds ahead of the song so I had a chance to switch to the LRC. Thanks for that consideration; it saved me some pain.
Met her at a an MCA gathering in 1992 for the "Alanis" release. A little bar across from Mewatta Stadium in Calgary. She was 17 I think, about to turn 18. Prior to introductions, the music rep threatened to kill me if I looked sideways at her. I wondered why until I saw her. I remember feeling an incredible sense that this person was a great deal older than the vessel in which she was contained. She has great eyes. It gets a 9 from me for those eyes.
...holy fark is this ever bad!...
jagged little pill and that is all.........game over. oh man THIS SUCKS!

Two words. Shag carpet.
This song neatly encapsulates everything I don't like about Alanis' music. The screech factor, the odd lopsided rhymes, the inane lyrics... She's probably singing about something downright meaningful here, but I lose it in the shuffle.

tres provocative!! On first listen I like it, let's see how it survives the test of time.

very annoying
You know, I just don't like her or this sound to begin with, but it sure seems like a jarring departure from the rest of the stuff on RP. RP is very eclectic to be sure, but there's still a general RP sound and this one doesn't go with it.

not one of my favorites by Alanis...buty she is talented. what lyrics, Gracie Slick inspired?

Well, this is the first time I've NOTICED Bill playing it, and I like it well enough to rate it - I start with a '7'.... I might up my rating later...
Nothing new going on with this woman. She still sounds pissed off.
All I think of when I hear her is that she's probably the very definition of a high-maintenance gf.

re: Nickelback comment...
I see RP has a few other tracks from this album...maybe they're better? Thought it was similar to "Uninvited".
I am nicely surprised by this. She is a survivor.
I don't love it and I don't hate it. I guess that is why they invented 5, I guess...
Whiny Girl
so far, so good
Only a 5.3 avg? Come on, this rocks
I have a hard time getting past her screaming--which she seems to do an awful lot of.
So this is off her new album, hey? I don't think I'll be buying it anytime soon. All the instruments sound like they're being played by me, which is a horrible, horrible thing.
this is just awful

Ditto. I'm not sure yet....
Its about time she produced something NEW!

Likeable but a bit over the top?
Surprisingly enough, I rather like this, on first listen. I'll see how it holds up.
Pretty bad.
I'd give it another shot.
too many instruments at once, sounds over-produced ...
She means well.
I dunno...she just sounds like an artist who's lost her sound and still looking for what she's supposed to sound like.
Ummm... No thanks.
Citizen of the shut the hell up
Effing hell! I like it! (My first first-post.)
