When I first heard it I focused on the plodding violins at the end and the schmaltz refrain. Then heard more from the album and returned to this song knowing they could  do almost anything, both musically and lyrically, and this was probably exactly what they wanted the song to be- a hopeful, upbeat march toward better times and better relationships. Years later I still love it and so much of the rest of their catalog. I hope you take the time to hear the album in its entirety and order. Perhaps you will feel a little different about it as it fades out next time.

Reminds me of the time I nearly died from food poisoning in India.  3 days in I finally was well enough to stand, picked up the Ipod, put it on random, opened the curtains in the hell hole I was staying in, this song came on as if to lift me out of death back into life.

This song turned me on to Elbow via RP. It has cost me a fair bit of dosh as I have since purchased all of their CD's and even arranged to see them in concert a few years back on a trip across the pond to visit family. Great time.

I don't know if anyone else noticed this, if it's below in previous comments.  About these two tracks -- Love Yourself by Boxer Rebellion and Elbow One Day Like This.  But the cover art of Boxer Rebellion is a photo of a curtain wide, and One Day Like This has the lyrics. Throw those curtains wide.  

I'm preaching to the choir.  Or not saying anything not seen by someone else. 
But umm, is this kind of epiphany, however small, possible anywhere else?

I came 27 years late to Elbow; only introduced when Little Fictions came out (also when I was introduced to RP *smile*). How I missed the first six albums is beyond me. Absolutely blown away by these gentlemen. Guy Garvey's humour and romance and deep awareness of Life's textures and details combined with the entire band's impeccable musical chops. Aural food of the gods.
