He doesn't make shoes or design a new shirt
Or take photographs but no one gets hurts
And he doesn't look trendy like guys in magazines
You won't see him at parties, he's not the face behind the scene
He makes nothing
He's the nothing maker
He's the maker of nothing
He's the nothing maker
And he doesn't paint pictures or write poetry
Or act on a stage for others to see
And he don't expect much Santa Claus knows
'Cause he doesn't make list of toys and new clothes
He makes nothing
He's the nothing maker
He's the maker of nothing
He's the nothing maker
Everyone's chasing a reason to live
Mostly they take more than they give
The succeeder justifies why he needs more than the rest
He believes his own lies and thinks he's the best
My guy doesn't make movies to suit an audience's whim
He lives by a code known only to him
And he doesn't make money to buy watches and cars
'Cause there's no time and no place to go
For a man who has nothing to show
He makes nothing
He's the nothing maker
He's the maker of nothing
He's the nothing maker
Or take photographs but no one gets hurts
And he doesn't look trendy like guys in magazines

Not going to deny she's an original talent, but the super-vibrato warbling is nothing original. It adds nothing to the song. In fact, I would have given the song a more favorable rating without it.
Besides that, I seem to remember being told that vibrato is a technique used to hide how difficult it is to hold a steady note. If that information is correct, then it implies she has difficulty holding a steady tone. I don't really think she has a real problem doing that, other than stylistic. I find it annoying though. I love to hear a good female vocalist hold a note without vibrato. Much more beautiful.
You're not very familiar with the Pretenders are you? That's just how Chrissy sings, it's her voice. It reminds me of the time that a producer said to Neil Young after one take 'That sounded a little flat Neil'. and Neil said, 'That's my style, man'.

I can't believe they're still doing stuff—cool. I saw a Pretenders/Iggy Pop double bill 22 years ago—was awesome.

So smooth. Every morning when I get up, I turn and bow in the general direction of Chrissie Hynde. One of the best concerts I've ever seen (the Get Close tour).
That was cool. So glad they are still at it!

This is actually their 9th studio album but it's been 6 years since their last one. Glad to hear them again, I like the song.
Oh my god, have they finally come out with a new album after all these years! I melt as she sings ever so softly ...

Her incessant warbling gets on my nerves

I'm surprised I'm so out of sync with the other commenters! I was grooving on this song and came here to comment and was shocked to see the negative vibe here.
Why is she singing like that?

I like this song OK, but I agree that Rosalie is far superior.
i've heard others from the new one i've liked better.

Think the "Nothing Maker" wrote this song too.
