Oh, oh, magnificent
I was born, I was born to be with you
In this space and time
After that and ever after
I haven't had a clue
Only to break rhyme
This foolishness can leave a heart black and blue, oh, oh
Only love, only love can leave such a mark
But only love, only love can heal such a scar
I was born, I was born to sing for you
I didn't have a choice but to lift you up
And sing whatever song you wanted me to
I give you back my voice from the womb
My first cry, it was a joyful noise, oh, oh
Only love, only love can leave such a mark
But only love, only love can heal such a scar
Justified till we die, you and I will magnify, oh, oh
Magnificent, magnificent, oh
Only love, only love can leave such a mark
But only love, only love unites our hearts
Justified till we die, you and I will magnify, oh, oh
Magnificent, magnificent, magnificent
It is Magnificent - I must bump my previous 9 > 10.
One of the few songs I feel compelled to whirl like a Dervish.
If it's any solace, it's easier for bands to find audiences nowadays than it was thirty or forty years ago. I think a lot of people look beyond the megastars anyhow.
U2 started as a small indie band with something meaningful to say. To my ears they are now a huge band with something meaningful to say.
Condescend much? Personally, I really feel bad for hipsters and their daily struggle to survive in our culture. U2 never held a single small indie band back (whatever the heck a "small indie band" is). Everyone is capable of finding their own music considering that today's culture offers so many varied choices.
Some find it here, but beware, Bill likes U2 as do many of us listening. I guess we all just love music that has nothing meaningful to say.
Yes Bill likes U2 - he has impeccable taste in contemporary music! U2 also reign supreme with many of us in their native homeland of the Emerald Isle and for what it is worth this song is one of my favourites :)
It is the nature of things..... The pop music industry is a 'winner takes all' kind of game. Just like professional sports.
As for the tastes of consumers.... it is what it is.
Fortunately for lovers of contemporary music, niche performers such as King Crimson, Bjork, Tom Waits, Sui Generis (Argentina), Serge Fiori (Quebec) and many, many others do reasonably well and provide a variety of music to listeners that is unparalleled in human history.

But it's better now.
Less megastars + many more genres and bands.
It's more level'd out.
Were I live, indie bands are flourishing live.
But yeah, radio wise is an other thing.. well you can find stations that don't highlight megastars
That is awesome. Thanks for sharing.
I couldn't agree more!
Note, at the end of the show, Bono brought up a blind fan from the audience who was holding a sing reading "blind guitar player", Bono gave him his guitar and he played All I Want Is You while Bono sang. The rest of the band came back on stage and backed him up. Then when the song was finished, Bono told him to keep the guitar. What a great way to end the concert.

Interesting post, but look up the word "nadir"
Thank you. Explains why I didn't get that Webster's editorial position.
Apex is what is was goiung for.
"with The Unforgettable Fire, U2 flickers and nearly fades, its fire banked by a misconceived production strategy and occasional interludes of soggy, songless self-indulgence. This is not a 'bad' album, but neither is it the irrefutable beauty the band's fans anticipated."
So let's not rewrite history. The band hit a real creative and popular nadir with Joshua/Achtung but they didn't have any radio hits before that. They were and always have been a band that wrote music meant to be performed live first a formost. I think that's why so many people have a hard time accepting songs heard on the radio for the first time, these songs are meant to be heard in an arena surrounded by screaming fans, and sitting in 200$ seats.

Wonderful tune.... Killer live and incredibly moving. Oh Oh - Bill's playing my IPOD again, PS, TH, DB U2
I have following this band for many years, in my opinion they still got it. There is a reason why shows sold-out.
What he said.....I agree with wholeheartedly.....down with the haters.
btw. in re. the cover art...OMG!!! two horizontal images of differing hue or light opacity!!! someone call the Plagarism Police STAT!!!
it's a HORIZON ffs...(face palms)
and Mark Rothko (I think?) based on the cover art

as a former u2 fan I have to agree! very well said
I don't know, I have just about every U2 album and have been listening to them since the beginning. Loved the Boy, October, War albums and although No line is no where near the quality of these albums, it is much closer in sound than anything they had put out for a long time. Never going to get that creativity they had when they that age again anyway, so I will take what I can get...its not a bad song or album.
Amen!!
Just shouty nonsense. Please no more U2.
Well said.
The early music from "the boys" had an IRA influence running through and through
Today there is a definite IRS tone to their Musak. If you listen really closely you will
hear the bell ringing out the floor number.

I have come to the same conclusion about success - is it that they loose their inspiration, loose touch with relevant subject matter, become bored or just become unwilling to take a chance with something new?
I suppose having a record company breathing down your necks for another smash CD can't help.
To me, this tune really sounds like it was written and engineered by a committee, based on previous winning formulas.
Joshua Tree. . .that was great.

Yeah, you can really hear the coldplay influences on this tune... vocals totally remind me of coldplay.
U2's primary influences are whoever's selling tons of music at a given point in time..

Oh do I just hate the term 'sold out' and the people that use it. What does it mean anyway? So they make music that YOU don't like anymore. Oh dear, how sad, now get over it!!!!!
4 - Acceptable - no more, no less.
Love the music and particularly the guitar riff in the chorus. The lyrics don't do anything for me though. Is it just me or is the word 'magnificent' not very rock'n'roll? Splendid, super and simply marvellous....

Isn't that backwards?
Boring? We disagree. Commercial - did commercial shift towards being more like U2 or did U2 change to be more commercial?

I like Unknown Caller, but this is pretty damn good too.

Far out, Catherwood. Just roll a couple of bombers and leave them on the side table.
probably not a native English speaker. Where's that side table btw?
agreed....
This new album "No Line On The Horizon" (2009) is not optimum but also is not worse of the Band "U2", but all we know that it is necessary to be above of the water line, to feed the circus of the world of music, but the truth is that the inspiration does not appear as well as opening the tap-of-inspiration and leaves a master-piece, definitively not, but this recent album also does not is a disillusion, Band "U2" and Mr. Bono is equal proper itself and if it recommends

Your posts are just as incomprehensible in English!
Ha Ha, didn't scroll down until after posting this.
But now I know why calypsus _1 writes so lamely. And I thought it was because he/she was a general idiot. They're just language conflicted.
We Americans stick to one language typically. I DO appreciate that others try our language and get it mostly right. Compared to calypsus, my use of other languages is nonexistent, but then English is the World language, correct?
No, it hasn't. Except the opening track, maybe. But I don't think they have run out of new ideas. They are trying to remain the main rock'n'roll group in a world that's changed. And it's not easy, if you think that no band in history managed to be relevant for more than ten years, and that U2 are in the big game since 1980.

Dude! Why the harshin'? Isn't it clear that he's a hybrid?
(or maybe just not that good with English)
It was just a little levity; no offense intended!
(you should see me try to write in French)
Peace!

Sounds like it went through a something-to-English translation. Give the guy a break. At least he's trying to contribute.
Hey, you're right!
they did it again

Love Bono's voice in this one.
and Moment of Submission.
I saw them on Good Morning America today and I agree....they lost me at "Pop", but I'm thinking they're back in the game on this album!
anybody else hear that song? can't remember who it's by, but that's what I was sure was coming on...
Henry Rollins? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxrd_jZJxkg
Ok, that makes no sense, so I assume that's not what you are talking about...

That great guitar riff just stays in your head! Great stuff, already in love.
Good one!
