Not quite the same thing, but I was listening to The Thorns this morning on the way into work. They were a collaboration between Matthew Sweet, Shawn Mullins, & Pete Droge, doing a guitars-&-harmony sort of thing. They had double album with straight up performances on one CD and another called The Sunset Sessions which was acoustic versions of the other disc.

It had been years since I'd last played the acoustic disc (the better of the two), but it was great singing along with the volume cranked.

While I like the vocals on the Kingdom of Rust album well enough, I much prefer the instrumental version as a whole and wish more bands/artists would do that kind of 'double' album.

I know Morcheeba did with Charango (instrumentals far superior to vocal versions) and Mike Oldfield with Man on the Rocks (both good, IMO).

Any other suggestions out there?

100% agreed!  I've always been fascinated by how simple a "rock" instrument the bass guitar is and yet, in the hands of a great musician, that simple bass does so much for a song; keeping rhythm and vibe, completeness of the full frequency spectrum, and possibly less obvious, adding suspense and emphasis to certain sections of a song.  

And after reading his Wiki page, I'm a bit impressed by Jimi Goodwin; he sings, plays guitar (and even the drums) in addition to bass, and as a lefty, he plays his bass strung for a righty and flipped upside down.  Pretty friggin cool!  I'm upping my 7 to an 8 now.

Yeah this dark spell spinny disco ball tune sounds like something they just have been wanted to play with in the studio for a while ... So they went for it ... Good spooky fun. I still like other tracks from the album as well, hey and speaking of spooky rest of albums, I like the rest of modern vampires of the city, by vampire weekend ... A lot ... like doves.

The first five notes of this song's vocal melody sound very much like those of like "Rapture".  The instrumental intro (or "lick") in this song doesn't really sound anything like that of like prior song, certainly not "note-for-note".

This album is fantastic, and one of my favorites of the year. Solid all the way through. They were great live, when I saw them this summer, too.

Oddly enough, I sprained my "sacroiliac" last month ( it still hurts) and I knew that some old song had that word in the lyrics but I couldn't remember it. Hearing this track by the Doves made me think of that Blondie tune and, voila, these lyrics;

Still lovin' this CD.  After shooting several games of pool while songs from this release were playing in the background, I thought to myself...the drums and bass really have a distinctly DISCO feel here.  Great bass tone as per usual with Doves!  Doves are just plain fantastic IMHO.  A big thanks to Bill & RP for introducing me to their work.   9/10
