I took my few belongings
We headed out to Pirate's Cove
In my buddy's old Defender
We ran until the gas got low
We were flying close to heaven
Everything was starting to glow
Drivin' into sunset
Rollin' cause we had to roll
I think he was a preacher
But lord I can't recall his name
He was running out of wind
But talking to me just the same
He said five 'll get you ten
But boy you've got to stay in the game
Yeah you got to let it ride
Or you've only got yourself to blame
We lost a wheel in Santa Cruz
So we partied with some motel maids
My friend said I don't like mine
So what do you say we trade
She was a part of my heart
Now she's just a line in my face
They let us go with a warning
Said we'd book you, but we don't have a case
My friend said take her with you
To leave her here would be a crime
But let's get outta Santa Cruz
All I got is a Canadian dime
I got a friend in Mendocino
And it's gettin' close to harvest time
And she was kinda cute
If a little past her prime
On the trip to Pirate's Cove
On the trip to Pirate's Cove
Drivin' into sunset
Drivin' into sunset
We headed out to Pirate's Cove

Well, that's what you think. I think Bill reads at least some of these. This song is a ripoff.

Agreed. I've posted about this. It's a total ripoff of the late Peter Green and should be dropped from rotation. Plus, it doesn't compare. Slabo Day has more soul in one 4-count measure than Pirate's Cove has in the entire song.

Tom Green
"past her prime", disappointing but I don't think it reflected his soul

My thoughts exactly. Rip-off? Cover? Have to check liner notes.
Two chords. (a "i - VI" progression). "Inspired By" perhaps or likely, especially given Tom's interest in older music, but that's far from a unique chord progression.

Troll!
7 -> 4
upon reading the lyrics, noticed the misogyny, really sad -- still like the line "she/(he) was a part of my heart, now she's (he's) just a line in my face"

All this Petty is playing well after watching the documentary "Runnin' Down a Dream," by Peter Bogdanovich.
It's 4 hours and 20 minutes, but splits well over two nights, or so...

Say it's a cup of coffee, and take the trip To Pirate's Cove with a canadian dime.
Brutal lyrics. I don't care if the melody is Te Deum.
My mum always used to say, “if you canny say something positive keep your mooth shut”. I think that’s a good attitude to life. So even though Mr Petty has taken Slabo Day, written his own lyrics over it, then renamed the song. I have no comment to make!
shameless rip-off
very nice!
No doubt, this is exactly the melody of Peter Green's "Slabo day"...

Tom Peter Green & The Songthieves.
I hope that Tom Petty acknowledges that this tune is Slabo Day and isn’t trying to pass it off as original? If you take Slabo Day wash it 100 times and leave it out in the sun for a year you get this insipid tune. Play the original Bill.
THIS is an unneeded cover. Just stick to the original please...
sounds exactly like my town. wahoo cruz

Bumping from 8 to 9. The more I hear this, the more I love the layers of sound, the sly nuances of the lyrics... This is, IMO, the best album ever from Tom Petty and the Homewreckers. I want this so bad I'd sell my body, but nobody would buy it, so I'll figure something else out.

Clive,
A Canadian Dime might reference a $10 bag of pot from British Columbia.
Mendocino is the Hippie capital of Humbolt County where a large proportion of the best pot produced in The US is grown.
Think St. Ives without the clotted cream.
This tune sounds a little tongue in cheek to me.
Chauvinistic, cheesy lyrics, cheesily delivered. By way of support I offer the following lyrical gem:
My friend said take her with you, to leave her here would be a crime
Let's get out of Santa Cruz, all I got is a Canadian dime
I got a friend in Mendocino, and it's getting close to harvest time
And she was kind of cute ... if a little past her prime!
Oh please . If it was meant to get a laugh then job well done but I'm not convinced it was. A solid 4 because it's so bad it's funny.

Seems to me Tom Petty like Johnny Cash (did) and Mark Knopfler (has and is) just got/gets better and better the further he/they goes/go/went/gone - bloody hell, a simple point made into a complete mess. Jist is, I like this...

This song is shockingly good! Tom Petty is the Ladanian Thomlinson of rock and roll, everyone left him for dead, but then he releases this!
Tom Petty has done some really rockin' and rollin' stuff that gets the feet tapping crazily and fires the blood, but every song played from this CD on RP has been solid Ho-Hum, including this one, sadly. The Nottingham jury's retiring for a quiet nap...
This is one gentleman/band I encourage people to see live. I have seen him three times and each show is unique and always a fabulous time.
Santa Cruuuuuuuz!
This whole album is great. Thanks bill for introducing me to it.
Bill you are in danger of a commercial radio sin: playing this into the ground. I like everything you've played off this CD but as an everyday all day listener it's wearing thin.
You really need to add " Don't pull me over" to your rotation!

This whole record makes me nauseous.
Laconic and so arch, as if he believes that being insincere is the same thing as irony. The guitar bits are hackneyed, the phrasing slack, just a myopic re-hashing of Rock and Roll that has been rehashed so many times before by so many better performers.
It is truly time for Petty to either get himself a heroin addiction, or become a sappy A & R man which is what he really is.
