I hear a bird chirping up in the sky,
I'd like to be free like that, spread my wings so high.
I see the river flowing, water running by,
I'd like to be that river, see what I might find.
I feel the wind a-blowing, slowly changing time,
I'd like to be that wind, I'd swirl and shape the sky.
I smell the flowers blooming, opening for spring,
I'd like to be those flowers, open to everything.

*Instrumental Interlude*

I feel the seasons change: the leaves, the snow and sun.
I'd like to be those seasons, made up and undone.
I taste the living earth, the seeds that grow within,
I'd like to be that earth, a home where life begins.
I see the moon a-rising, reaching into night,
I'd like to be that moon, a knowing, glowing light.

I know the silence as the world begins to wake,
I'd like to be that silence as the morning breaks.

*Instrumental Interlude*

I hear a bird chirping up in the sky,
I'd like to be free like that, spread my wings so high.
I see the river flowing, water running by,
I'd like to be that river, see what I might find.
I feel the wind a-blowing, slowly changing time,
I'd like to be that wind, I'd swirl and shape the sky.
I smell the flowers blooming, opening for spring,
I'd like to be those flowers, open to everything.

In another life? I hope you won't continue to resent these very talented ladies because of a band name.  And perhaps their name is their way of giving credit to Mr. Jennings' influence on their music.  Open your mind a bit, and brush that chip off your shoulder. Oh - and a smile would be nice, too.  I've always loved Waylon Jennings' attitude on life, death, and taxes. Doesn't mean I can't embrace other artists - even ones who might be paying homage to a legend by cleverly naming their group in a way that would immediately call that legend to mind.

And should I resent The Audreys because I had Audrey Hepburn as a hero?  Or the Dandy Warhols because I admired Andy Warhol's art?  Or the Rembrandts?  Or DaVinci's Notebook?

Peace.  Please?

Great response!
Whenever The Wailin' Jennys play on RP, I can't help to stop anything I'm doing, close my eyes, and just let go of all my stress and worries while listening to their angelic voices and heavenly harmonization.

I was just rating this at 7 when the beautiful harmonies suddenly became even more beautiful with multiple melodies, almost a canon. Wow. So, 8 it is then.

That sums up my approach on this one too....maybe after hearing Arlington Road though, very impressive set of pipes on this trio....Long Live RP!!

Wow.

So, 8 it is then.

EDIT a year later: changed to 9. Gorgeous song.

pretty stuff!

Seriously, though.  Would like to hear some actual Waylon Jennings.  This group's name is so annoying.  They're good, but their "clever" moniker is just distracting.

Nothing sinister in the name, the 3  were booked at the last moment for a gig in Calgary and needed a name, as a joke they punned  or maybe Spoonered) on WJ and the name stuck. Not sure they like it any more than you do.
This song would have blended well with the O Brother soundtrack — it has that nice "ole timey" feel to it.

The name is also an elegant pun, since a "jenny" is a female donkey or ass, and the sound of three jennies wailing would be something indeed to witness.

Agreed. I like this group alright, but their name really bugs me.

The names that bug me are The Beatles, The Crickets, Adam and the Ants, Praying Mantis, The Bees, The Termites, The Mosquitos, and Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars—tho' as we all know spiders are not technically insects since they have eight legs, but they're just as icky!

I guess it was kind of cute the first time I saw the group name. But Waylon Jennings was a hero of mine in another life and now I just resent them... their music certainly provides no reason for the reference.

WJ would have loved this and laughed his ass off at some of the comments here.   He was a very kind but complex musician who used to drive up Franklin Pike in his daughter's Jag XK-140 at supersonic speed.   R.I.P ole buddy!

Yep, I know what you mean. How dare they find a name that has the same initials as your hero - and in the correct order too!

Burn the witches!

Ethereal — charming — transporting
I love both Waylon AND the Jennys. But I guess I am a woman of paradox. Lucky for me I can hear them both on RP!

I like their tunes, but I guess we all have our own bears to cross...or something like that.
Fondly,
Norm Crosby and/or Yogi Berra

There is something about a good vocal harmony that makes shivers go down my spine... in a good way.  A very good way.  It seems to be most common in bluegrass and bluegrass-like music, but occasionally happens elsewhere.  The Jenny's have this skill down.  I cant get enough.
Great new CD by the Jennys. My personal fav is track 2, All The Stars
So, I'm standing in my bedroom, folding freshly-dried towels, and this song comes on, and I say aloud, "That's the Jennys!"  Checked my computer, and I was right. I knew it before I looked, because I had a sort of exhale in my soul that told me stronger than anything that it was the Wailin' Jennys.

Their music is so exquisite and beautiful that if I die tomorrow, I'd die happy if it happened while "Take It Down" was playing. Loves me my Jennys. {#Meditate}
Hooray! New Jennys! {#Yell}
