Babe, there's something tragic about you
Something so magic about you
Don't you agree?

Babe, there's something lonesome about you
Something so wholesome about you
Get closer to me

No tired sighs, no rolling eyes, no irony
No 'who cares', no vacant stares, no time for me

Honey, you're familiar like my mirror years ago
Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on it's sword
Innocence died screaming, honey, ask me I should know
I slithered here from Eden just to sit outside your door

Babe, there's something wretched about this
Something so precious about this
Where to begin

To the strand a picnic plan for you and me
A rope in hand for your other man to hang from a tree

Honey, you're familiar like my mirror years ago
Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on it's sword
Innocence died screaming, honey, ask me I should know
I slithered here from Eden just to sit outside your door

Honey, you're familiar like my mirror years ago
Idealism sits in prison, chivalry fell on it's sword
Innocence died screaming, honey, ask me I should know
I slithered here from Eden just to hide outside your door

What the hell is the cover art all about?
This is fresh and inventive.  I really love it.
Love the 5/4 time! Doesn’t sound forced or gimmicky, rather it flows nicely.
A fine man, born on St. Patrick's Day.
"Take me to Church" was mind blowing.
5/4 - didn’t know what it was called but I like it because it makes the song stand up in a crowd

Somebody said he had a grating voice - they must have a low tolerance level.  He actually has a very good singing voice in the 'normal' male singing range and only occasionally gets temped into singing falsetto.

Unlike most of his contemporaries who all think singing falsetto sounds good.  Nobody, from the Bee Gees and Chris Martin to Sam Smith sounds good singing falsetto - in my opinion.

I am not talking about those lucky men who have a naturally high range e.g. Robert Plant, Neal Young, Rod Stewart, Jon Anderson  et al.

I mean those that sing in their normal voice then switch up into falsetto.

Good on you Hozier, lets hear it for the male voice in its normal range and not the castrated squawking that passes for popular singing these days.

What about the counter-tenor voice?
amazing

Chris Isaak maybe?
This album is surprisingly surprising
Highly recommended if you like this
Wholesome about you? He's been wearing a mask since 2014! Way to go, boyo!
When hozier was 21 he was doing this, he surely knew his stuff:
hozier Time
His painted out face on the album cover looks kind like a beautifully decorated surgical mask.

And ahead of the times too!  This album was released several years ago and he had the foresight to be wearing a medical mask on the cover!

I've never heard anybody complain about a specific note before, but good music terminology.
I think the song is OK, with some sweet guitar tone and I'm digging the 5/4 rhythm.
Love his voice, love that he has women musicians on stage with him, that he doesn't ego out in performances, the messages in his lyrics.....
Great range, great singer, great song... Feelin great!

And now for something completely different....

The background singer on Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart" is a guy. His name is Roy Dodd and he's a background vocalist know for his unique falsetto (per Wikipedia). I'd a never in a thousand years guessed it was a dude.

Just one of those things you stumble across down those rabbit holes.

And now back to Hozier...
Love you, Meg!
this is a good song
There’s something wretched about this....

Personally, I find it refreshing to hear something in a time signature other than 4/4. Love the 5/4 lilt!
I feel like his churchiness is coming from a "don't throw out the baby with the bathwater" place. It might just be me, because that's how I feel.
Ireland.  So much of this music has this "biblical" quality to it.  "Slithered here from Eden".  "take me to Church" Just an observation.  Love his music

I think you are mistaken, I think 99.5% of this is not in falsetto. The, "hoo-hoo," bits are, but not the rest.

Very nice song, has a classic feel to it, well sung by Hozier.

Agreed...
nice tune.
Good lad from Bray.{#Bananajam}
Cool track from an overall listenable album. Easy 7 from my ears.
Overhyped... I guess I'm past the Hozier hoopla.
I like it.

Might I suggest that that readers/listeners check out Wyvern Lingo, a group of 3 girls who also form Hozier's band.

6 -> 7. Probably the best track on the album.
Great tune
I highly highly recommend giving this album an honest play-through. Enchanting, rocking, Earthly and dark; he has this interesting ability to make even the feel-good tracks feel somewhat desperate and brooding, in a good way.

Oh yeah, the "Take Me to Church" guy... Refreshing to hear this rather than that one which is overplayed on Top 40 (hey, no haters; I have teenage sons).

Thanks. I was trying to remember where I knew the name 'Hozier' from. Not a bad song. Might have to pick up the album.

There's a very pleasant warmth to this song.

:-)
Shucks... I've heard this tune enough now that it's kinda irritating to the ears...  :-(
It has run its course.

Nice song.  That part is true.

Not a bad song, eh, ya Hozier!
Does he perform with band or only himself?

Not bad! Nice cover btw.
Cool tune with unusual time signature.  Sounds like a 5-count.
Nice!

Reminds me of Paolo Nutini!
HEY BILL!
How about some PAOLO NUTINI!!!!
Nice tune. Good singer and his melody has a good hook. Starting at a 7.
Saw him in Rotterdam, Holland, Songbirds Festival...last week. So Great! His voice is high and low and live as good or actually better..
Never heard of this fella before . This is a good song .
Oh yes! I second that... loving Hozier
so glad to finally hear hozier on RP
