aDoble1967 probably thought it was U2 because, as the song opens - to me, it sounds a lot like the rhythm of U2's "New Year's Day" song...

I like Future Islands but but I think their sound is let down by the drumming. I'm surprised to see someone listed on percussion. To me it sounds like a drum machine programmed by a beginner.

Some listeners here posted that they hear Peter Murphy and a British sound to this band. I get that comparison, but the sound reminds me of German synth-pop of the early 80s. Kraftwerk maybe?

  I've been wrong about Future islands, I put them into a group of new artists that seem to be put together in a boardroom and whose sole mission seems to be not to offend.  This song has some grit. Cudos guys!

Back in 82 a friend introduced me to Tom Waits via various homemade tapes. I was more than a tad surprised when I finally saw his album covers to discover he wasn't an old black blues man. Future Islands frontman pulled the same trick on me... not sure who/what I expected from his voice but it wasn't a cross between Jack Black and Burt Reynolds.

I would venture that you didn't look very hard.  As of right now I've rated 7822 songs.  I do tend to confine my song opinions to numerical ratings.  I doubt anyone really cares how much I hate song X or Y.

"Disbelieving" would have been a better characterization of my post.  Nonetheless, it was a serious (if somewhat curt) question.  What part of this reminds you of Tonight She Comes?

Evidently they listened to quite a few British electronic/synth artists from the 1980s, which is somewhat interesting since these guys were either very young or not even born when that music was released.  The singer even affects a British accent - nice touch for a guy from coastal North Carolina.

maybe cuz another seatown RPster posted this pic, but damn and wow this looks a lot like one of my college party houses -  just north of 50th on Brooklyn....course they're all gone now w/ apartments up instead.

And maybe I'm one of the few that REALLy like Sam's voice....true I haven't listened to a full album as yet so maybe it get's tiresome when you flip the record?

Yes, the same (3-chord) chord progression (different key) in the verses, different progression in the chorus.  When it comes to tempo, just about every Future Islands song has this tempo, and this one's tempo is faster than that of U2's song.

My observation also. Of course, my perception is based on hearing this band on RP. They have a distinctive enough sound, but if each piece hews to the same framework, this will wear out. Maybe this beat is necessary to unleash the singers' gyrations.

Good call Proclivities.  I think of this as 'synth-pop'.  More traditional (irony intended) so-called progressive rock seeks to switch up the tempo, adopt unusual time signatures and use the bass on occasion to drive the melody.

I quite enjoyed the last Future Islands CD so I will listen attentively to this and other songs off The Far Field CD.
