Metro has been having a series of little incidents that have called safety into question.  Within the last two years or so, at least two MOW workers were hit and killed by trains.  In 2004, there was a rollback incident in which an empty train rolled into another one (seen here — note subway wall map hanging in the opening).  Unbelievably, this one resulted in only minor injuries because the operator yelled at everyone to get out.

In the latest incident, the operator of the train that was moving did not survive.  Unknown why she hit the other train, but speculation is on a missed or passed signal.

The last Metrorail incident that resulted in passenger fatalities occurred in 1982.

It was rare that I used the metro, as it was not a difficult drive for me when I worked in Riverdale/College Park area.

Guy had a nastier than usual drive home from Fairfax County because of the OTHER mess going on 495/95!

It wasn't a head  on collision like originally reported. It turns out that one train rear ended the other. Luckily they were both headed INTO town, not out, or they would have been packed.

Admittedly, I don't know much about D.C. geography, so I don't know how the commutes are for either of them or anyone else in the area...

 Ironically, the entire DC  Beltway is also shut down due to an unrelated truck fire.
