Right now I live in Virginia. My home is in Massachusetts.

The other day, it was election day here in Virginia. I did not vote. I live in Massachusetts, and that is where I will vote.

In America, domicile matters. A citizen only has one address, and we are expected to vote there.

I would be upset if a bunch of someones from Virginia voted in my election in Massachusetts. I am sure that the someones in Virginia feel the same way about a lot of Massachusetts interlopers.

I think it depends on their status.  An EU citizen is unlikley to become a UK citizen because there is really not much point.  Any EU citizen is entitled to live here.  However I would imagine that Heeb's wife has a different status as someone of ?Nigerian birth living in the UK.

Long time since I posted on RP... I am still alive!!!

Anyway, I am Dutch, living in the UK now, and had a funny experience this evening:

As some of you might remember, my wife is Nigerian. She received *two* voting cards, some time ago, whereas I received *one*. I thought it was a simple mistake. Turns out it wasn't:

I, because I am a European citizen (Dutch), am allowed to vote in the *local* elections. Cool. I did.

My wife, because she is living here with me, is allowed to vote in the *local* elections, just like I am. Cool too. She did.Here's the joke:

I asked the lady at the polling station why I received just the one card, whereas my wife received two. It turns out that my wife (Nigerian) is allowed to vote in the national elections as well, *because Nigeria is Common Wealth*, whereas I am not, because the Netherlands is, of course, not Common Wealth.

So, *finally*, for the first time in our lives, we encountered a situation where my black African wife had *more rights* than I did, a white, European citizen!!!

We thought that was rather funny.

Finally, past colonisation pays off ;-)

Anyway, we both voted, I one time, my wife two times.

Quote of the election so far for me - from Michael Portillo, a man who stood for all the things that I detested - and whom after '97 rejoined the human race google the guy - very interesting, really - he was a rabid right wing anti-immigration militaristic tory whose father was a fighter on the Nationalist side who escaped Franco's firing squads by, yes you guessed it, asylum in Britain. He's still a dodgy rightist, but I'd have a beer with him and a good chat.
