Bummer. The voice search feature would be very nice to have. Bastids. That's what I get for buying rev 1 !
Though, the Roku app for the phone does improve things a LOT when searching for something, in addition to having the functionality of the handheld remote. And - with it's latest update, you indeed can do a voice search from it. So hey, it all evens out.
That said, I agree with that CNet reviewer - the Roku 2 (which seems to now be a re-badged first gen Roku 3) is a better deal. Add on the free Roku phone app and you have almost all the goodness of the current gen Roku 3.
I talked about it in the baseball thread but this one loads everything a lot faster than our old model, and I haven't encountered any rebuffering. MLB was terrible for that.
I wish the buttons could be easily reprogrammed. I don't plan to use the rdio shortcut ever.
navigating the search keyboard with remote versus spoken command is worth the $mall price difference (imho)
I would like to lodge a complaint against Roku about that. They make it very difficult / impossible to see actual model numbers of the device you're buying, and the last few iterations have all been some flavor of "Roku3". We had a coupon for a Roku3 and it said nowhere that it was not the latest version. I figured it out a day or two after the order. But the kids and voice recognition=amusing at first, then annoying. So I let it go.
We just upgraded from an early Roku to a last-generation Roku (not the latest with voice control). It's way better. Some channels, like PBS, didn't work on the old model anymore, and MLB used to buffer/reload after a half hour or less so that eventually I had to reboot the box. Typically 2 reboots per 9 innings. The Roku3 hasn't done that one time yet. The old one was 720 max, this one's 1080, which I had forgotten about, and was just used to how stuff looked via the old box. The ball game I'm watching right now is beautiful, and only part of it has to do with the score
So if you have an old Roku, yes, the new ones are better.

It does. Because I'm lazy/googlefinger borken, what's the difference betw. ac1200 and ac1750? Are there other flavors of AC? My understanding is it has more gooder wall-punching-thru ability. By the time it warms up and we're wanting to enjoy the summer yard, it'll be nice to have that...
Those look really cool... but they are not available in the U.S. store, says Mac.
edit - hang on, there's a "U.S. and International Resellers" link at the bottom. Let's see where that goes.
Errrm. Shouldn't need to buy it, unless you're after their latest and greatest version, IIRC.
I have it loaded on my Goog Android - and it twas free... can't see what ver it is though.
Yes the resellers link was a dead-end. I googled inSSIDer and came up with http://www.techspot.com/downloads/5936-inssider.html and they also wanted to connect to the Mac store. Alas, it's not there on their link either.
So maybe Apple withdrew it?
But then I found Chanalyzer (http://www.metageek.net/products/chanalyzer-mac/download/) and something downloaded by itself! I'll have to check it out now; looks similar.

My Rosewill usb wireless adapter that I use with my Hackintosh came with a program like that minus the tracking over time ability. Works great for finding an open channel. Seems around here most everyone uses one of just 3 channels so they probably just used whatever was the default.
Seriously... uh... on the tech note: What kind of WiFi are you using? You should have plenty of bandwidth for browsing and music. Have you done any kind of analysis? Is there interference or something else going on there?
Lath & plaster... just doesn't punch thru with any kind of power...
When we open the ipad, it kicks our music off our wifi network. We could use that to set up a separate network, leave the ipads on the original, have the music hit the Netgear signal instead, and move it outdoors in the summer, where our wifi won't stay connected well. I could listen to RP while I mow the lawn!
that's right and once you light up your house you can just add these anywhere
they also have encryption
it's worth noting that these can't or shouldn't be plugged into a power strip

FYT.

I have a very capable vid movie streamer - the Asus O'Play Air ... a few years old now, but utterly flawless for watching downloaded flics in ANY format.
And am looking at cutting the cable cord ... so will need a decent streamer. This looks very promising. Especially when I see they are offering network NEWS channel(s). can you tell me which network news channels are available? I saw NBC news in the vid. What about CNN, FoxNews, BBC or any other news nets? I'm assuming they're offered free (?). Can't get any info on the Roku website on a full channel lineup - bastids.
Of course what Roku will actually offer in Canada may perhaps be different... the Roku 3 isn't even officially on sale yet through the Canuckian web store. Pfft.
