I had an older model that only did 720P and would have jumped at that but last week a friend got me the Roku 3 for my BD.

Signed up for the month long free trial of "Acorn TV".  It is all British programming.  A number of shows that are not on NF and those shows that are on NF are more complete and up to date with higher viewing/sound quality.  At $2.99/month or $25.00/year it seems like it is a pretty good deal.

Probably will continue for a bit after the free trial.   No contract so it can be cancelled at any time.

hmmm....

i didn't have any problems installing and updating the PLEX software

they do describe known issues and fixes in their updates

you may have a piece of software currently installed (usually some sort of security program) that may be interfering with the installation

sometimes i will temporarily close or disable firewall, anti-virus and malware programs during the initial installation of new software

on a similar note, i'd suggest running maintenance (tune up) programs often, including back ups/cloning of my hard drive

if you're operating/running a microsoft or apple system you can go here and get some great tune up software that will help performance

once your cleaned up you may have a better overall experience including installation of new programs

I regularly clean/tune up the computer using Advanced Systemcare.

I got it to work last evening, and was successfully watching the American Masters program about Jeff Bridges (The Dude Abides) and decided to rewind/back up to watch something I didn't catch, and it froze up and then threw me back out like I'd never been watching it. I turned it off at that point. I'll see if I can get back to where I was in the program (about halfway through) tonight.

Okay, I'll give it a shot. Thanks for saving me from having to actually READ a software forum.

So, I uninstalled and reinstalled the Plex server software ... it hung up on the "loading" screen so finally I just skipped it. I was able to add channels on the computer. Went to the Roku and got an error there when I tried to open a channel. Had to turn off and restart the Roku, but it seems like it's going to work. Guess I'm getting what I'm paying for, huh?

We'll see how it works. Thanks all!

That happened to me too. Apparently it's a common occurrence on Windoze. Some of the forum posters said to just skip past it and run the software. That's what I did, and so far no problems.

Okay, I have to say that that part of the process was not readily apparent on their webpage. And I'm usually pretty good at making my way around software.

But, I just tried to install the server software and got this error message: "A problem has been detected with a core component of Plex." So now I'm supposed to copy my "logs" and post them on a forum.

Really? Tell me this will be worth all this trouble.

Did you install the server version of the software? I just installed it on my Win7 PC, and there's a Plex icon in the taskbar. You should have already created a log in, but if not, do it.

I right-clicked on the Plex icon and selected Media Manager. That opens up a browser interface with two choices - My Library or Channels. To the right of Channels is a little +, which takes you to the Add Channel page. I selected Categories, and then Educational. I found PBS in there. It showed up on my Roku in about a minute.

Hopefully that works for you.

Its nice they have a Mac version of the server but to bad it doesn't work with Sony BluRay players. Since that does most of what I want I've been holding off getting a ROKU.

Sony (or some very talented hacker) would have to come up with a firmware upgrade with the client installed.
