I bought my pistol in large part as bear defense . . . and no longer haul it with me for that purpose.  I've become convinced that bear spray (as Lazy said) is likely to be much more effective.  And won't result in a (best case) dead bear or (worst) a wounded one.  And I'm more likely to use it effectively in what would certainly be, uh, trying circumstances.

A sufficiently nasty person, I'd still shoot.  But a bear's getting a face full of  capsaicin.

You can ship from one FFL holder to another and pick it up at either endpoint. PITA, but it beats going to jail in Canada.

And bear medicine can work just fine—I have friends alive today because of it. Just don't expect a popgun like a 9mm to do a hand-cannon's job.

Hey, shouldn't they at least provide you with a Beaker or 2 to throw in front of a bear if you get attacked? Anyone?   I mean shouldn't Canada do that?

 That's weird, you'd think with all the mooses and stuff, they'd let you just pop one  and make some truck manifold steaks  as you travel. Damn backwards society. {#No}

Regarding that story I posted yesterday about the woman who shot an intruder in her home....I just saw on the news that the guy checked into the hospital with a gunshot wound to his face and is now in police custody.  I guess he missed the day in his Home Invasion 101 class when they were told that all gunshot wounds get reported to the po-po.

I've done it more than once, but that's a lot of gear to tote around. If I was in range I'd help you get set up, but I wouldn't want to get in the way of an ideal dating opportunity for somebody. I can't think of a better opening line than "Can you come over and help me set up my reloader?"

You can be extremely anal and hard-core about it and measure every round with a pair of digital micrometers, or you can just crank the handle and make buckets of ammo. Guess which side of that fence I fall on...

Dillon will get you started with a good setup for $350. You need a good sturdy bench to bolt the press to, and a dedicated space to work in helps prevent mistakes. Then you'll need a recipe book, powder, primers, brass, and bullets. You'll also want a case tumbler to clean up that grimy range brass you haul home, trays to hold things, and eventually you'll want a scale. It can get pretty involved. But it actually helps you become a better shooter.

You'll understand the process better and you'll have time to think about all that happens between the trigger and the target. It's part science, part zen.
