Soooo,  now that my powered (RP version,  AudioEngine)  speakers are plugged in to the newly arrived $35 Chromecast AUDIO dongle, Google play music just isn't cutting it...

Imagine the exponential jump in listenership/donations once RP shows up in the new music app choices within the updated chromecast app!

I will now silence my thoughts and pray for relief from the Googleized pseudo curated drivel I'm stuck with (for now?)

Nudge nudge

Thanks for everything else Bill!

Cool. We made a change a week or 2 ago that fixed things for a lot of people, but the underlying cause was an Android networking issue. Glad the latest update addressed that (knock on silicon).

 Sooo. ... how about Chromecast?

Sounds like you have it set to use cell networking, but don't have enough data throughput to properly play the audio (1 bar 3G, for instance).  I'd suggest setting 'Data Usage' to 'WiFi only'.

The current version of the app has a setting labeled 'Auto refresh cache'.  It is checked by default, and means that the app will re-sync with the live stream (discarding any "stale" cached programming) when connected to a WiFi network.

If you UN-check that, it will play from the cache only until it is exhausted.

It is checked (had always been). It seams that when it tries to re-sync, something wrong happens and the bandwidth of the streaming is reduced to less than 96k, plays 10 seconds, stops 10 seconds and so on...
It works perfectly with wifi, but fails on mobile network

Hope it helps...

Hello
I'm using a lot the android app in my car and i have some troubles since last update.
Usually it starts ok, but after half an hour the app chops the music in bits of ten seconds showing 0.00mn of cache.
Then, the only solution I found was reboot the phone (boring), until I find out that putting it in plane mode a few seconds and back normal did the work.
The app restarts and buffers quickly again, until the next half an hour...
Is this happening when travelling thru a no network zone ? It'd restart poorly, using the cache and then starting chopping...

Is anyone experiencing the same issue ?

Nexus 4 android 5.1
App 3.4.21.gp
30 minutes cache 96kogg
{#Arrow} Starts on wifi on garage then to network (could be one of the causes)

I've just updated to 3.2.4.gp, and was disappointed to see that the Android app lost access to the AAC streams.

To my ear, AAC 128kbps is preferable to 192kbps Ogg Vorbis.

I'm having to use 50% more bandwidth when I listen to RP, for almost equivalent sound quality.  I stream on my mobile data connection, so it matters.

I was thrilled to discover today that the AAC streams have been reinstated to the Android app. Thank you for this!  And for the 'bonus' super-HQ stream!! :)  Nothing out there can touch RP for audio quality now. (not to mention the programming)

Hi,

I'm using the Android app on both my main mobile (with full HD screen), 10,2" tablet as well as Amazon Fire TV and Amazon Fire TV Stick. It works great on all devices and lately I become quite fond the accompanying picture slideshow during the song play. However as there is no dedicated "HD" version of the app for any of my devices I'd like to ask if you're either planning / considering HD version for at least the Fire TV / Stick devices as the picture quality suffers most at those via large screens or at least if there would be a possibility to add HD / SD pictures option to a "generic" Android app to allow user select the picture quality vs. bandwidth needed (or make it more intelligent based on the type of connection used etc.)?

Thank you for all the great music!

And the removal of the AAC streams was 'silent', not mentioned in the What's New changelog.  I wouldn't have updated had I known.

Sorry about that. The app was not handling the song transitions properly on AAC, so I requested that that option be removed. I'm not sure why it wasn't mentioned in the changelog.

I know, it's hardly "new" anymore, but I have been using the Android app's ability for a few months on my Samsung Galaxy Nexus (a little long in the tooth, it's 3+ yrs old, running Android version 4.2.2) and decided I need to say something about it.  Seems Verizon data access in the Long Beach area can be kindof sucky and when driving CA State Route 60, data totally drops out for quite a while.

Now, these previously irritating dropouts are gone...  I have been really pleased with the ability to use the cache on road trips as well as riding my bicycle around town.

Thanks RP!!!

I had also the consuming problem with a Nexus 4. I looked to the thirsty process, and it appears to be "Exchanges Services" related to a Microsoft exchange mail box that I have, managed by GMAIL. I killed the processes related and the phone stopped consuming battery. The processes were restarted automatically. Very strange. As I listen to RP very often, I did it almost ten times and it always succeed. It started with the version 3.1.4 RP APP. My Nexus runs on 5.0.1 Android.

I recently did a month long road trip winding my way up, down and across the USA. Thanks to the buffering of up to four hours I was able to listen to RP the whole way! Yay!
Thank you thank you thank you!

well,

i don't know if it's that good, on my nexus 7- 2gen I had to uninstall it because when we stop RP, it stay active and consume some power.( when we look in the "battery" option we can see it , 4% battery drain or 2% sometimes. I don't know why . I now access RP with a browser so I'm certain that when I stop it, it actually does.  The only problem with some browsers is that I can't use the OGG links.

edit, new : I've just seen that with firefox beta on android, we can choose the OGG 192 stream,  perfect to stream with Bluetooth on some better speakers. Another great thing with Firefox is that it start right away, instant music, no need to wait for the music to start.

I hope they will fix this android app so that when we stop it, it just do that :  STOP.

I'll check with our developer on that. It shouldn't drain battery when stopped.

You can also use the app switcher to close the app when you're finished using it.
