After their Opening Day loss, as I was leaving the stadium, some drunk guy said "Rangers suck - haven't won a game all fuckin' season." It was pretty funny, and the crowd around us burst into laughter.

I worked in the Bell labs system for a bit. One of my jobs was reducing com codes. We had com codes for everything physical in the system and our maintenance requirements were such that we warehoused a ton of stuff at hot locations around the country so we could fix things for customers quickly. Of course everything having a com code led us to a system where it was required by the standards to assign them to EVERYTHING. So we wound up with some weird stuff in the database. As part of the project I ordered a few of the odd ones to see if they were really active and if they would show up. So among the things I ordered were "Paint, AT&T Grey", "Brick - Columbus", "Stool, 3 legs, white". Sure enough I got grey paint, a white 3 leg stool, and a brick. Turns out Bell Labs built the facility in Columbus OH. In order to get the place built, they had assigned a com code to the bricks in the building so they would have a way to order them with our existing systems. It also meant we had pallets of them in warehouses around the country. Lots of interesting tidbits from those days. Amazing when you think how that system evolved.

ScottFromWyoming wrote:We had pulse dialing up until I went away to college. When I first got a load of touch-tone dialing I was all " there is NO way that can work." My first job out of college in the late 70s was for a company that made a lot of specialized equipment for phone companies. I hated being in Terre Haute, but enjoyed learning all the telephony trivia. It may have been worth the two years out of my life. My crowning achievement there with an assist from Racal Vadic was shutting down all the long distance calls in Jefferson City, Missouri one morning . The really cool thing about that is when you do it they can't call to complain about it, at least right away. The equipment we made had to call up and collect data from a bunch of different devices and if it couldn't get through for some reason it would keep trying. The dialing unit Vadic made sent out the tones just as fast as the standard said you were supposed to be able to decode them. The switch at the Jefferson City phone company though wasn't quite up to the task. Further all the circuits had logic in them to assume they must faulty and shut themselves down to let the others handle it when they continually couldn't get through. We had a bunch of lines, nothing else to do, and were very persistent. It didn't take too long to bring the the entire switch to its knees.

The letters on your phone dial were to help towns come up with a mnemonic device to recall your number. 754 was SKyline4. The next town over is 587: JUbilee7. So you'd tell people your number was SKyline4-1234. But we could skip the SK so nobody did that. But there are a few Skyline businesses still around. Skyline Drug and Skyline Cafe. Used to be Skyline Motors and Skyline Texaco, probably more. My ex-FIL worked for the phone company. Area codes always had a one or a zero in the middle, ever wonder why? And yes, you'd hear radio jingles with an advert for a business giving their phone number out: "Just dial NAtional 7-5227"
