Middy and I just did. Take a walk, that is. In a warm, summer shower. I love walking in the rain, even if it does result in a wet dog.

I've been working on some information for the Finnish family we are swapping houses with shortly and came across this website for our local area. If you scroll down the page with is a great map insert with clickable walks. I've already bought some of these walks in pamplet form from the tourist information office but this website is a great resource for locals and visitors to South Devon. I've downloaded several of the pdfs of the walks for our visitors. Here's a good site for Dartmoor too- not an official one as the National Park authority is rubbish at producing this sort of info but this is nice and comprehensive. PS Noenz- you need to know that there isn't a similar thing for pubs

Think of your walk as a tool in your arsenal of life... physically, it increases blood flow, which oxygenates your organs and your brain and keeps them at maximum health and function, along with vitamins... walking two or three miles a day also really helps you sleep a lot... if you do some steady walking every single day it will dramatically improve your sleep...
walking will also psychologically empower your will with positive mental attitude...
studies have been done comparing Zoloft versus a daily exercise routine for treatment for anxiety and depression... researchers were surprised to discover that after 12 weeks, the exercise matches the Zoloft in treatment, and after 10 months, the exercise blows Zoloft out of the water... Zoloft does not hold a candle to it after 10 months... see, this is a problem with the exercise routine— it does not provide immediate gratification... the benefit takes time to gradually develop as your body improves...
so if you can motivate yourself to walk regularly, over time you will feel enormous benefits physically and mentally... just put one foot in front of the other...
It sure does clear your head. And don't forget to stop and smell the roses, look into the trees, and down on the ground, and laugh with the children.

And don't forget these— they will keep you limber—
here are some data about back exercises... these will help you keep your spine strong and limber... establish a pattern to do these every day, or every other day, if you can—
shrugs- shrug your shoulders all the way up, then move them all the way back, then bring them down... do this slowly, ten times...
side bend neck stretch- tuck your right arm behind your back, put your left hand on the top of your head, with your left hand on your head, pull your left ear down to your left shoulder, hold for five seconds, then rotate chin to left shoulder for an additional five seconds... do this five times, then do it all over on the right side for five times... repeat on both sides one more time for a set of five... (two sets of five times on each side...)
rhomboid stretch- sit with your ankles touching... lean forward and cross your arms straight over your legs, then widen your legs at the knees... hold the stretch for 10 seconds and repeat 10 times...
long sitting trunk rotation- sit with your left leg straight and bend your right leg across your left leg, basically where your right ankle will be on top of your left knee... put your left hand on your right knee, then turn around and reach behind you with your right hand... hold this stretch for 10 seconds... complete two sets of five reps on both the right and left sides...

Like many people posting here we love where we live and to be able to walk out to places like this is wonderful. The land on this part of the coastline is owned by the National Trust and it is part of the South West Coastal Path. What a lovely area of the Devon coast! You are fortunate to live so near.

In case you missed my posts in "Charity Link" and "All Dogs Go To Heaven": This coming April, Pippin & I will be walking the American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life" to raise funds. If interested in supporting us, please go to the following link. I thank you in advance for your support. http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR/RelayForLife/RFLFY09EA?px=8801537&pg=personal&fr_id=13943 BTW: When I take Pippin for a walk around the neighborhood, Eddy the Cat likes to tag along. Sometimes he lags behind, other times he sprints ahead of us as an "advance scout". People in the neighborhood get a real kick out of it.
