the truth is that I was WAY MORE interested in sports as a kid than reading ....

This Perfect Day by Ira Levin.

Yeah, he wrote No Time for Sergeants and Rosemary's Baby and Boys from Brazil and Kiss Before Dying, which are all excellent.
But this one really stood out.

Dave Berg's The Lighter Side of... was required reading.It especially provided a lot of insights once I got introduced to the works of Owsley Stanley.
