Oy, and I have a bike ride today.

This is absolutely the worst year ever down here in southeastern Oklahoma.

European nettle extract, available in capsule form from your friendly neighborhood supplement source. Allergies alleviated in a half hour. Bing! Done.

I can't take Zyrtec either. Loratidine is barely noticeable in effect, side effect, anything. I haven't been bad this spring tho, so hey. But when it's really bad for me, the best thing has been the saline rinse. Waterboard yourself, you'll get to where you look forward to it! Plus in the end it costs basically nothing compared with the pills.

Oh, yes. forgot to mention that. Zyrtec comes into play only when the saline rinse fails.

Similar problem for me, and Zyrtec is about the only antihistamine I can take. The non drowsy Sudafed Actifed, etc., keep me awake at night. Benedryl lets me sleep, but causes other problems - ask HJ in about 10 years. Zyrtec is intended to be taken one pill a day, so I take it just before bed so it helps me get to sleep and guarantees a clear nose and throat through the night.

the article states that using tap water is to blame. Apparently it's okay to ingest brain-eating amoebas but don't snort them.

Yeah, that is an interesting concept...Probably just turned up the chlorine in the water supply a little....

Where are you getting pollen from with all that nice fresh air coming in off the Atlantic?

I don't know - we had a lot of rain overnight so I think it could be stuff that was already suspended coming back down?

But a lot of people here do not develop an allergic reaction to the worst culprits until they've been here a few years. We get cedar, then oak, then pecan pollens, in predictable fashion at specific times. Some of the old timers get it the worst, while newcomers don't seem to have any problem.

If it gets really bad for me, so bad I feel sick and the antihistamines just ain't cutting' it anymore, I go to the doc-in-the-box and get a shot of hydrocortisone. It starts to work almost immediately, and lasts a couple weeks or more, long enough to get through the worse of the pollen production. Sure it's a steroid and can have side effects, but one shot, once a year (or less)? I've got more important things to worry about.

I don't think allergies are amenable to generalizations. People who've never been affected, sometimes develop debilitating seasonal allergies. If it's a matter of acclimation, it is a NEGATIVE effect.

That's why I wrote "If you can survive a season or two without antihistamines (and other medicines that suppress the immune system..."

I know that some allergies can be serious and life-threatening. Give the naturalistic method a try if you can and see if it works. If you get so bad that you can't stand it then, of course, see a doctor for a chemical solution.

I lived with allergies for years and then I tried the natural solution. I admit that I was in absolute Hell for two pollen seasons. Since then I've had no allergic reaction to pollen at all.

I also broke an allergy to wool by forcing myself to wear a wool cap. I had a rash at the hairline for months and then one day it just stopped. I've been able to war wool without a reaction ever since.

If you think that crazy medical word is long, try pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosistry, which means inhaling dust that causes lung inflammation...

for Scrabble, I would go with ENT...
