That unfortunately amusing statement aside, this is a scary thing. Our state is in the early stages of a massive bust cycle; this might become more common. And the governor just slashed the state budget for many services, including suicide prevention.

The woman in the article, Pamela, is a friend of mine.

Tragic. Resource economy busts are not fun events. Though hopefully this oil bust and most of the bankruptcies and lay-offs are now behind us.

That said, the US tight oil sector has been innovating and reducing costs at a steady pace. The glut in natural gas continues. Employment is not about to pick up sufficiently to absorb more than a fraction of those who lost their jobs since mid-2014.

The USA could have adopted policy to attenuate the bust but then Alberta could have done the same and instead chose the 'get-rich-quicker' route. At one point in 2015, folks were issuing death threats to the newly elected provincial premier who and whose party were clearly not responsible for the sudden, steep oil price slump.

Bordeaux said the gunman had been “out of control” for the past week.
“I’ve seen him ranting and raving,” he said.
He wasn’t sure what the man was saying when he would yell outside his home, but he did hear him say “cuss words.”

“I was thinking, man, he’s losing it,” Bordeaux said.

Maybe somebody should have alerted somebody. Just sayin', and sad regardless.
