Drunken carny arrested at Cody Nite Rodeo

A drunken, shirtless carnival worker – who police say earlier picked fights with strangers and appeared to start taking off his pants in public – was arrested at the Cody Nite Rodeo last week.

Police were called to Stampede Park on June 3 for a report of a person in the stands causing a disturbance and threatening to fight others.

Upon arrival about 9 p.m., officers found Clint Nefzger, 39, of Gillette detained by two rodeo staffers. He was shirtless, had a small cut on his forehead and appeared heavily intoxicated, officers noted.

Court records indicate Nefzger was in town as part of a crew of carnival employees setting up the Shriners carnival at City Park.

Officer Chris Wallace wrote in an arrest affidavit that Nefzger became loud and obnoxious in the stands before removing his shirt and taking swings at random spectators.

Rodeo personnel said Nefzger did not appear to know the people he was threatening. They intervened when he allegedly began swinging at people.

One employee said he encountered Nefzger in the walkway that leads to the grandstands and said he was being loud and waving his arms.

“He had his belt unbuckled and appeared to be unzipping his pants,” the employee told police, adding that Nefzger also attempted to fight him.

At that point, the employee called for backup. With the assistance of two others, the crew removed Nefzger from the stands and detained him until police arrived.

An EMT suggested Nefzger be transported to West Park Hospital for treatment of his head wound and general incoherent state.

During transport and in the hospital, officers say Nefzger was combative. At one point he allegedly took a swing at a paramedic and at another point attempted to kick a nurse.

When Wallace went to secure Nefzger in the hospital bed, Nefzger allegedly grabbed Wallace by the neck refusing to let go until another officer intervened. He allegedly mumbled that he would “kill Wallace.

“He had erratic mood swings. At one moment, he would be calm and saying he respected us,” Wallace wrote. “And then the next moment he was telling us he wanted to fight us and kill us.

“Nefzger was rude, vulgar and combative toward hospital staff.”

Based on a toxicology report, Nefzger had a blood/alcohol concentration of 0.352 percent (the legal limit to drive is 0.08), court records state.

Nefzger was booked into jail about 1 a.m. June 4. He faces four misdemeanor charges (three counts of simple assault and one count of breach of peace) and one felony charge (assault of a peace officer).

If convicted, he could receive up to 10 years in jail on the felony charge and six months in jail for breach of peace.
