Yes it is, but I do use iTunes so the issue doesn't come up very often! Uploading to the LRC maybe.

A person doing a lot of that could invest in a CD-RW disc and have at it.

You can transcode your AAC files into MP3 that will play on just about anything. It's a process, but it is automatable with a bunch of software: So says Google .

If I do buy something like a SanDisk, are the songs I do have through iTunes (we have one Nano) useless?

It's amazing to me that they did this a few years ago and have been remarkably successful with it. But there is almost no competition. Most of the time when some one comes up with a good model a lot of others jump in the pool and competition brings prices down in the market (good for consumers). But here we are half a decade later and itunes are still $0.99. Bandwidth has come down, server prices are lower, the model is proven... what's the hold up?

Primarily I buy used CDs from amazon but I also I buy 99 cent tracks from amazon. They're 256 kbs MP3s. And sometimes amazon doesn't even charge me.

One perspective is that a 'standard' album might have 12 or 14 tracks and cost 13 to 15 dollars, so the math isn't that bad. And besides, 99 cents is a perfect price point — look at all the Dollar Stores.

But there is no media to produce, deliver, store, tag, inventory.... No clerk to man the register at 3:00 in the afternoon when there is no customer around, no electric bill or rent for the storefront. The whole model has been simplified.*

*-this is a stab at the XXIA industry who has failed to make the transition into the modern digital realm with the rest of us. I actually applaud Apple for recognizing this opportunity. Unfortunately in typical Apple fashion, they have made it so that you are locked into their hardware platform and are paying a privilege for the opportunity to do business with them.  Closed systems are bad for consumers, a gilded cage is still a cage.

First of all, 99 cents per track is too much to pay. In this, I am steadfast.

It's also my understanding that tracks purchased from iTunes are not in a wholly-unincumbered, true MP3 format. You're welcome to correct me regarding this point.

And I don't want to escalate this, but rather want to let RPeeps know that there are alternatives to paying "the Apple tax" for all of their computing and entertainment needs.

They're not mp3 at all. They're AAC at 128k with DRM, or $1.29 for Non-DRM 256k AAC.
