Turn off the television/computer except for an hour a day.
Sit coms, dramas, reality shows - they teach folks to be rude and ignorant.
And, what would people do with their time if their electronics were turned off? Try it sometimes: except for radio, which doesn't always require you to be sedentary while you participate, leave it all off.
Now what do you do?
Try running a homestead, tending the animals, growing and harvesting food, mending fences, chopping wood for heat and cooking. Waking and going to bed with the sun (except for tending the fires all night in shifts). There is always something to do, that was life before electronics and still can be. God bless chainsaws though.
Yet it was Papa who offed himself. Some irony in there someplace.
Yeah, a lot of Hemingway was semi-autobiographical, I think. I sure got the impression he felt it all a little more personally. Steinbeck started out as a journalist, so probably cultivated a skill for telling the story without becoming the story. He obviously felt for his characters, too, but not in the same visceral way.
I love Steinbeck but even his funny stuff leaves me depressed in a pretty serious way. I never got that from Hemingway (not as much), maybe Steinbeck just hit closer to home.

Not that fond of Hemingway either but Steinbeck absolutely rocks.

(For perspective, I thought Jack Kerouac's On the road was self-indulgent, narcissistic garbage and threw the book out after getting not even 1/3 of the way through.)
And yet you can sit through an entire Porcupine Tree song?
I kid. I'm a kidder.
I didn't make it too far thru OTR either. Anyway, thanks for bumping the post from 2009
Yup! I can sit through back-to-back Porcupine Tree CDs on a road trip. Imagine. Tastes, eh?

Humility please. Once the narcissism starts to creep in or colour things, it is not long before I bow out. Maybe we should start a separate thread on the books we did not finish reading and why.

That's just a pipedream, and a Spanish one at that.
