Dio, Maryte, JRenae and I saw 'Alpha Rev' this weekend at BatFest. Their Myspace page lists influences: Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, Creeper Lagoon, NIN, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Van Morrison, Tom Petty, Vince Young, Romeo and Juliet Soundtrack, Queen, Ours, The Cure, Him, Handel's Messiah, Swervedriver, Travis, death, life, and black churches.

They sound sort of Porcupine Tree-ish, with a modicum of Coldplay mixed in. In a good way. Worth a listen, regardless.

And, of course, we were getting down to some good funky jams with Mingo Fishtrap.  Here's a taste, for those who missed it:

"Fearing’s songs are like comets in the night sky. Breathtaking, soulstopping, but a lot of people are looking down and so they miss them. If you get up really close, their power is almost frightening."

Charmparticles - http://www.charmparticles.com/ This band is from Portland Oregon. Here's a description of  the band from their website:

“As dreamlike and hooky as ever and bursting with what seems like a lifetime’s worth of conflicting emotion, Charmparticles’ lucid and chord-heavy presence continues to surprise. Riding on last year’s triumphantly simplistic and densely layered Alive in the Hot Spell, the group continues to build on a formula that should have died with Billy Corgan’s credibility. Instead, the riffs keep building—along with Charmparticles’ foothold as a Portland mainstay—from one soaring crescendo to the next.”

Colin Linden - http://www.colinlinden.com/

Colin Linden - Biography (2009 - From the Water)

Of how many artists can it be said that they’re getting better, 33 years into their recording career? Colin Linden can certainly be considered a member of that select club based on From The Water, the 11th solo album in a storied career that has also featured his work on literally hundreds of other records. At last count, the total of albums on which he has played stood at over 300, while at least 70 albums bear the ‘Produced by Colin Linden’ credit.

Linden is a genuine renaissance man of roots music. He’s a singer and songwriter of great skill, an in-demand and prolific record producer ( Bruce Cockburn, Tom Wilson, Colin James), a sideman to the stars as guitarist for the likes of Bruce Cockburn, Emmylou Harris, and Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, and, for the past decade, a member of the highly successful trio, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings.

Colin’s songs have been covered by The Band, The Blind Boys of Alabama, Keb’ Mo’, and Colin James, and his well-stocked trophy case includes seven Juno, multiple Maple Blues Awards, and a Toronto Arts Award.  He was nominated for a Grammy Award for the star-studded A Tribute To Howlin’ Wolf CD, and was involved in the ground-breaking O Brother Where Art Thou phenomenon. Linden has a well-deserved reputation as a slide guitar virtuoso of real originality, and his riveting slide work can be heard both on albums from such artists as  Cassandra Wilson,  The Rankin Family, Whitey Johnson and on his own sizeable solo catalogue.

Elliot Brood - http://www.elliottbrood.ca/ Band from Toronto. This is from an article in Vue Weekly:

"the band’s sound is a mix of acoustic instruments and a generous heaping of distortion, which has the effect of disconnecting the sound from a particular time period: is it old-sounding because it’s acoustic? Is it modern-sounding because of the distortion? No, it’s simply rootless, drifting to wherever it needs to be."

Paper Lions - http://www.myspace.com/paperlionsmusic from Prince Edward Island, Canada.

“When these guys showed up onstage all wearing ties, I should have known they meant business. Paper Lions are cracking musicians, marrying catchy, shout-along pop with madcap showmanship. These guys have been nominated for multiple ECMAs; it's only a matter of time before the rest of the country starts to notice.”
