Cats up? Where? In the air? Must we do this again? You need to use spellcheck. There is no such thing as catsup, unless it's some kind of sick New Zealand thing like dwarf tossing.

I don't think Manbird charges people extra for using PayPal. PayPal takes a percentage of the total, tho, so if you owed him $200 he's saying it would be worth it for him if you sent a check for $200. I have seen merchants that charge for using PayPal but I really don't understand that. Especially on smaller amounts owed, a merchant doesn't want to spend a lot of time chasing down a $20 payment so even though the % PayPal takes is high on small charges, it's still worth it. Sell something for $20 and spend half an hour billing it out and reconciling etc. Vs Sell it for $20, pay PayPal $2.50 and get $17.50 today.

Just today, I tried to open my account and it didn't recognize my password. I tried to enter by answering security questions, but they asked questions that didn't match any I had answered before and they wouldn't accept the answers because the answers didn't match the ones they had on file. I tried again by giving them my credit card number, but I had just been issued a new one with a different number so they wouldn't accept that either. I called and was told the only other way was to fax them a letter with a copy of my credit card and driver's license or to open a new account with a different email. I ended up opening a junk email account with Yahoo, then opening a new PayPal account which I'm pretty sure I will never use again.

When I first signed up, I opted for the interest bearing account which was earning over 5% at the time and that would nearly cover the fees. It also allows me to accept credit and bank card payments online for my business - and that has been a huge advantage for me. The fee for accepting payments is reasonable to me but I still ask clients to send a check for amounts over $200. I like using it for small purchases, too. The service is fast and reliable and I've had a couple disputes settled immediately. I do all my Kiva transactions with paypal.
Why do you charge? I bought some items from a site for my kid and it was an amount that should have covered the $15.00 that the store wanted for using paypal. I canceled the order.

It's also worth remembering that credit cards often treat PayPal purchases as cash advances (which usually involve additonal fees and higher interest rates), not purchases.

I have a business account with PayPal, and have been a customer for going on ten years. I have never once had a problem with PayPal. Yes, the transactions take a few days... but it is still quicker than waiting for a check in the mail. Yes, they charge a %fee, and with larger transactions that is a factor to be taken into consideration. And refunds? They charge no fee on refunds to either party. PayPal has been a boon to my work. It has made possible a variety of services that would not have been possible without them.

"Cancelling" a transaction looks instant but it actually takes over a WEEK: It takes 2-3 days for the original money to be withdrawn from your bank account (it gets withdrawn, no matter how quickly you cancel the transaction). Then it takes 2-3 days for the canceled money to be refunded back into your PayPal account. Once the money is in your PayPal again and you transfer it to your bank account... it takes 2-3 days for the money to show up in your bank account.
PayPal is great for casual purchases when there is NO HURRY.
But for anything with a deadline? Nope. Complicated by HORRIBLE phone support.
It's a great idea, and I'm sure all these delays are for our own protection somehow. I just wish they were more upfront and obvious about how long everything actually takes.
thank you for this. i had a serious question in the "HELP!!!" and "QUESTIONS" thread regarding paypal, etc.

yes, just recently. And PayPal screwed up the order, and the client had to spend an hour on the phone straightening it out. And I'm always in a rush to get paid! So time was of the essence. Waiting a week for the money to move around seems like an eternity.

I have sent and received payments through PayPal. I have never had a problem, but I have never been in a huge hurry for the money either. And it's never been more than $100. I would be leery of using it for large or time-critical transactions.
