with the current Israeli government (ok, any Israeli administration) any concession seems to be taken as weakness so maybe he's seeing what a tough stance does
Personally I agree with him but this is really a matter of where the two sides ie the Palestinians and Israelis can get to to resolve this horrendous situation.

Do you really think he would come out and say what he did without completely creating a scenario for this? This is not a dumb man, by any means. You can be sure that plans are in place already. If you don't get that, you have no understanding of how this president operates.

In a situation where it's likely to be close, you don't want to anger any of your potential supporters. In this case, figuring that he's a sho-in for reelection, he can do what he wants, even if it angers a subset of his base. If they don't like it, what are they going to do, vote Republican?

I am guessing from my small sampling, that many American Jews are having a hard time standing behind Israel, finding them an embarrassment in the least. Jews would like peace in Israel as well. It's the crazy Orthodox that make all the trouble there.

I like to imagine his actions are more closely related to trying to broker some kind of peace deal, rather than merely pursuing political ends. But I have a vivid imagination, so who knows.
I do not see how either side of the conflict will ever agree to anything. Using pre-1967 borders is a non-starter. Stopping the construction of new settlements is a non-starter. Making Jerusalem the capitol of Palestine is a non-starter. Agreeing to the right of Israel to exist is a non-starter. Too many extremists on all sides.
