Mom can sing.  I mean...she can really sing.  She was always so scared to sing for anyone though.  Finally she got up in front of her church and just did it.  That was 10 or so years ago I guess.  She sings all the time now.  Still makes me cry.  She ambushed me the other day.  She wanted me to come to her church so I agreed (haven't stepped foot in church in ages).  Anyway, she sang and I was sobbing.  I know all those people were saying "Wooo!  Look at that sinner cry".  lol  She knew if she told me she was singing I wouldn't come.  I'm just so proud of her for over-coming her fear and that feeling never gets old.

Wow, Beez....that is so cool. Got any recordings?? I would love to hear that. And..........I realize it was your mom most of all, but in addition to that some of those real gospely songs (especially the 3-part harmony ones) can be very stirring, emotionally—whether you're a believer or not. Something about the composition of them and the delivery.   One of my best friends' daughters sang one at her grandfather's funeral, and OMG.

Because I always hit mute when she's on, I never saw/heard those lyrics before. They ARE good. Very poignant without being syrupy.

Did you see the section about Florence and the Machine on Jackson's page?

My best friend killed himself (with a .22) in 7th grade. It's now clear he'd been working up to it for years. I told my co-worker to take this all very seriously because kids that age aren't bullshitting about stuff like that. IME.

After yesterday's conversation, the mom broke down and confided in my coworker. I'm told that the father (mom and dad are still together) has never held the boy. WTF.

No, they are not. It was like an epidemic in this town a few years ago...... (EDIT: I never knew that about your friend, Scott—how tragic that must've been for you at that age — or any time, really. My niece was in the 27-club)

I'll send good thoughts to that family for sure.

Again I say—-why do people like him get to be parents, while some of us don't. Grrr.
